re doing the interior and need some help
first of all i have some questions, the steering wheel cover from the stock steering wheel is going bad, is it ok if i just cut that off, or is it got something important under it? How do i take the shifter **** off? what do i need to look for in terms of compatability for a new steering wheel, shifter ****, shifter boot, e brake , and boot?

There is a guy who makes shifter boot and handbrake covers in various colors, I bought a pair and they are fabulous quality. Red Line Accessories in this section.
Shifter **** just unscrews. Match the tread and you'll be fine.
Steering wheels will require a hub adaptor for afteramrket fitting

You can get a really nice Grant steering wheel on ebay for $60.

Yeah. I know they were an option on 84 and 85's... It was sepeate from the "leather option" too, from what I've gathered. It was called "leather wrapped steering wheel"... May have been available on earlie years, but I'm not sure...
It's a fair bit fatter than stock too, due to the thickness of the leather.
Felt weird when I switched to a stock rubber wheel....

From: We're all fine here now, thank you. How are you?
I wish my shift **** just twisted off. That would be nice. mine is 2 pieces and I have to take off the shifter surround and boot and the another lock nut before i can just twist mine off. You luck SOBs.

I've never cut the steering wheel cover off, but it should be fine.
As fo the ****, it just unscrews, though it might be a bit tight.
If you can't get it, try the following:
Pull the top of the boot down off the silver nut thingie.
Grab an adjustable wrench and tighten the silver nut thingie down away from the **** (they are seperate pieces), while holding the **** still.
You don't have to turn it far, just enough to break it loose.
Then the **** should unscrew easily.
To re-install tightly, do the same in reverse

In regards to the steering wheel cover. If the lacing for the cover appears to be real lacing, then you could cut that and remove the leather cover. Who knows what you will find underneath, but my guess would be a stock wheel.
If you don't like what you find, most any other 7 wheel will fit, one of the few cross gen compatability things Mazda did.
