Unhappy rats nest is gone... now car wont hold an idle??

I removed the rats nest today and the car starts and runs with the choke on... but when I let the choke off it dies.

This was the first time I started it up, I still had a vac. leak around the blockoff plate so I shut her down and re-did my gasket and am letting it sit overnight.

In the mean time if anyone has suggestions of a problem or step i may have overlooked, that would be great!

has to be a vacuum leak somewhere . . . . keep searching, use carb cleaner/brake fluid to help find it if necessary - spray it on places where you suspect a leak and if the idle changes, you found it.

Put the rat's nest back. The rats are pissed.

Well that was helpful gsl-se84, thanks.

drjeff, the leak on the blockoff plate could be it. If it doesn't idle in the morning, after fully warmed up, you gotta keep hunting for vac leaks. Propane gas is an alternative element to use in looking for vac leaks.

ok... it holds an idle now but it stutters at idle. I was reading another thread and they said there car stuttered at idle due to a vaccuum leak, I dont think I have a leak anymore, is there anything else it could be?

how do you know you don't have a vacuum leak?

Take a pair of pliers and crimp all of your vacuum lines one by one. If your idle jumps up you have pinpointed your leak. Also try the brake/carb cleaner but it can give you false readings, especially around the carb. Instead of finding the leak, the fumes find the top of the carb, if you know what i mean.

Have you adjusted the idle mixture screw at all? I'm sure you still have a vacuum leak somewhere, buy a can of carb cleaner or starter fluid and have a little spray.

I removed my rat's nest a couple of weeks ago. It idled a little rough. A little carb cleaner discovered that the blocking plate made of 1/8" alum was leaking and a plug on the shutter valve. I put a little silicone around the nipple on the valve and found I had to make a double gasket out of gasket material with gasket sealer to get the blocking plate to seal, this is after 2 attemps of just using gasket sealer. It's working fine now.
