It looks like gold flakes from the gold rush days, lol.
Looks like you may be tearing her apart. Looks like bearing material.

Are the larger pieces, silver, or clumps of gold?

That's not a good sign. The last 2 motors I tore down, I did it on the ground with no air tools. I locked the flywheel, put my 1/2" drive ratchet on the e-shaft bolt then stompped on it with my foot. Both of the motors that I did like this the nut loosened right up. I don't ever heat them up.

If you have a 1/2" breaker bar that will give you more leverage.

If the still have the starter in tact, wedge a breaker to the frame and then crank the motor for a quite snap.

sad to see its going to be a rebuild on the bright side, it could just be an opportunity to cut some huge ports :P

the stat gear is sweet but the bearing is totally gone..
guess its time to get out the spare motor and see how the compression on that is

i will do a rebuild someday but if i can get around it with another motor i will

future plans involve my streetport motor and a dremal

That's the color they should be Chris. No worrys there. Overheated ones are darker than your's.

While you have the oil pan off, mod the rear oil pressure regulator. There is a thread in the archives on how to do it. It also wouldn't hurt to pull the ropr and the front bypass regulator off to clean and check them. Along with pulling the front cover to check the tension on the oil pump chain and upgrading to the 17.5 mm oil pump if you want to lay out a little extra cash.
