The GT was Canadian not Japanese, and they are supposed to be rare.

Are you sure? I am looking at buying one that came from japan, it is a right hand driver, and it also has a rear seat. But it has the RX7 GT badges on it. My friend claims that its a 1976. And he sais that it was like one of the first 300 made, and it was made for a market test to see if the public likes back seats or not. I am going to check the vin to see but its interesting. Any one else have any ideas?

RX-7s weren't produced until March '78. And ALL Japanese RX-7s (until very recently) had back seats, as 2-seaters are frowned upon there.

Rarest wheel

Probably the '79 Lmt Ed. Basically a more open "Waffle"design. Only 3,000 '79 Lmt. Ed's were built. Owned one, know that count for a fact.

Second would probably be the '83 Lmt Ed which were basically an early BBS edition of the 2nd Gen Vert wheels. These, IMHP, are the best looking stock SA/FB wheels. Second best was probably the GSL-SE's.

I thought the '80 LE wheels were the same waffle design of all SA's. If actually different, can somebody post a pic?

Now we have to find the rarest after market wheels for the 4x110 bolt pattern. Specifically 15" wheels. I have a set of 15x7 Enkie's (picture) a set of 15x7 Ronal 5 stars, and a set of 15x7 AR wheels that look just like the 2nd gen convertable bbs wheels. Mine are black with a polished alluminum ring.

OK i go to look at that car tomorrow so we will see. I am going to get the vin. so we will see. But did you understand that i said that this car was supposidly one of the first 300 made. this would meen like before the public did not even realy know about it. It was supposidly for a small market test to see if people liked them. So if what this guy claims it should have a realy weird vin or serial number. Do you know any where or will you be able to tell me if i post the vin?

If it's one of the first 300 then the VIN should be SA22C-000xxx where xxx is a number between 1 and 300.

Didn't the last first gens roll off the production line in Australia? "RX-7 Final" or something like that. What wheels did it have? Or am I mixing up my history.

The 1st gen "GT" IS a Japanese model. Canadians got the same models as Americans did with the exception of the GX.


(right hand drive GT).


Here some historical info on JAPANESE RX-7's I posted awhile back in case anyone missed it...

RX-7's are introduced in 1978 as "Savanna RX-7's". It appears that mechanically all the cars where similar (drum rears, open diff, fender mirrors). Major differences between models are limited to paint jobs and interior trim levels). The interior of these cars is very similar to the US SA's. The line up in 78 is:

"GT " Fully loaded SA available with leather (luxury model). Available in many colors.

"Limited" Limited production models that feature funky paint jobs and 2 tone, plaid twill interiors. Available in Mica green, Yellow and Red.

"Custom and Super Custom" Dont know much about these. I assume they where the "regular" cars with custom and super custom reflecting their flexible option packages.

In 1980, the new models arrive. The revamped Savanna RX-7's now have the molded bumpers and available rear disks. Rotor shaped wheels are also availbale. This model change resembles the US "SA to FB" changes in 81. Models include the "GT", the "S-GT" and the "SE-limited". I beleive the SE-limited was the new top end model with disks all around, rotor wheels, lsd and 12A (similar to our 81-83 GSL). All these models still sport the fender mounted mirrors.

In 1983, the 12A turbo GT-X is added to the lineup. It's basically a US GSL-SE with the SE wheels, brakes and diff. It also has the SE steering wheel and shifter, but the dash and gauge cluster is the same as the 81-83 US FB's. This model (and probably all others) now have door mounted mirrors.

Japan never saw the FI 13B 1st gen. It appears that model was only offered in the US as an alternative to the more powerful (but less emissions friendly) 12A turbo. 13B RX-7's appeared in Japan with the introduction of the 1985 "new" Savanna RX-7 (2nd gen).

nice recap. keep in mind that 83 was the first japanese year for the series 3, as opposed 84 here. all series 3 in japan and australia(maybe other places too) had the US GSLSE bolt pattern and most likely same suspension.

And, who ever keeps coming up with these different wheels, better find pics of them. Ive seen, personally, the 83 LE wheels, waffle wheels, steel wheels(2 different styles, 1 of them was probably used as a spare), cross wheels, rotor wheels and GSLSE.

Does any one have a pic of these wheels? I think my friend has a set behind his garage but i am not sure. Are these realy rare? If so i could get them for pretty cheap if any one is interested.

In regard to the waffle wheels, there were two types - the 80 Leather Sport Gold Waffle Wheels and the 79/80 Silver Waffle Wheels. See the picture: the Leather Sport wheels are on the right

I feel dumb... I thought the 80 LS wheels were black. The car I saw must have changed them out or painted them. Oh well, I guess I don't really want 80 LS wheels then.

So are the waffle ones valuable?? I have a chrome set and a set which has been powder coated black with the middle hub bit gold plated. Want to get rid of the chrome set atm but they seem to be only worth money to rx7 drivers (I wonder why)

this is the "85 model aussie 1st gen. known as the series 3

it is still a SA22C as we like japan never got the FB
some of the late series 3's had two tone paint and LSD's which were rare here.

Is anyone looking for some aftermarket 4x110 wheels?. They are A/R style 534's, 13x7. These wheels are used but are in like brand new shape, they are not bent anywhere and have no curb rash!. I cleaned them up real good and they look brand new!. As for any of you spec. 7 guy these are Spec. 7 legal and are the better 13x7, so you can mount wider tires on them!. If anyone is interested please E-mail me at RaveEuser@aol.com. They have been listed on the partstrader twice now and both people wanting them fell through. The waffle wheels are somewhat rare - they're one of the oldest Rx-7 wheels. I may be getting a set of '80 LS Waffle wheels

The Rotorwheels were standard here in Sweden in 1983, still many of the 83 cars have them on..
I have had two cars with these wheels..
Now I have none left..

I know a complete 1983 for sale with these wheels...

GT Spring Shot
GT-Turbo
GT Turbo Limited Version

If you can not afford Rotor wheels buy a Tamiya model kit of the Savanna which has them as a building option. Add a touch of PhotoShop and you will have what you want!

No GT models were sold in Australia. Here Mazda restricted sales to one model per series, except for an occasional 'limited edition'. Thus, no model designations were allocated and SA22 was applied to all series.
