Random Car turn off (electrical)

So when i drive my car some times it will randomly be driving fine (anywhere form going 20-30 mph around town to cruising on the highway at 80) and the car cuts off and my stereo goes out basically like i turned the key all the way to off then back to where the stereo can play again.

When i pull over and go to start it it does not want to start and makes a few loud pops out the exhaust (only time it backfires ever) starts up after ~8-10 tries with the choke pulled and givin it gas and then runs just fine.

I put in a whole new fusible link box so thats not the problem. it is scary as hell seeing as i was around 2 hours away from my house drivin at 80 on the highway last time it did it and you dont know if it will start back up.. any idea what it is.

The head lights will stay on so its not a battery connection failure. everything still works except the tach and stereo (that i know off its very fast) any help would be appriceated.

O yeah cars a 84 with new fusilink box, and bat relocation to hatch bin.

Possible loose connection at trailing ignitor or bad ignitor.

Recommend that you either replace the trailing ignitor with another one or just swap out the leading and trailing ones and see if the problem persists.

wich one is the trailing. i sprayed the contacts on both ignitors with contact cleaner hoping that might help it a bit.

The one closest to the alternator.

Recommend that you download a copy of the FSM per the link in my signature. Has all of this information in it.

Ignitor would not cause the radio and other stuff to die. Sounds like you're still having an issue with the center fusible link connection.

it sounds like a problem i had a while back but it was when i tried to start it
when ever i hit the key to start it if the stereo was on it would turn off and that was the only thing that turned off, the lights stayed on and nothing else tuned off but the car wouldnt start untill i tried half a dozen times. it turned out i had a short coming from my stereo and when i tried to start it after that the short was stoping the starter from getting enough juice to turn it over. i dont know if thats your problem but its a problem i had with similar symptoms.

well it will turn over and all but not stay.. it just happened to me going thru the walmart parking lot.. some idiot hit me from behind when it did it to cuz he wasnt paying attention.. (no damage iot was liek 1mph but still)

when i try to start it it will die immediately.. i try the choke i try givin it gas i try everything... it will backfire alot like reallllly loud liek gunshot louse a few times.. but it will eventually start.. i dont know but its makeing the car scary to drive cuz whne it does it it takes a good 3-4 mins to get it started again..

i think its gettin enuf juice to the starter seeing as i had the starter getting the car liek started enuf to give it gas and had it at like 4k rpms.. but as soon as i let the key go to stop the starter it died...

Sounds like the electrical portion of the ignition switch may be defective.

i have a parts car that i know it works in cuz it ran for a little till the carb went to hell then everything else started breaking that i can pull it from. thanks anyways man =). i guess ill be replacing that. I was testing it and i turned the key off and then back on when i was driving (almost home like within drift distance) and it did the same thing not wanting to start up with the backfires soo its def the metal switch assembly.

Another possibility is that you might have a wire from the battery arcing over something grounded. I recently had a problem with my battery shifting over and the + touching a grounded piece of metal and then after that it would start sometime and sometimes it wouldn't. It just happened yesterday and I never had a problem with it just shutting off on me (except for when the battery shifted), but I think I was just lucky. Today when I changed out the wires from the battery I found that the wire going to the fusible link block was actually arcing over to the battery bracket where it was routed over the bracket and shorting things out and that is why sometimes it wouldn't start until I wiggled the wires a little bit.
