Rainbow Dash Brony Lovefest Megathread
So awesome!
If you're age 18 to 35 you might know what I'm talking about, or if you're a 4chan user this needs no explanation. I'm not. But I did find out about this emerging internet phenomenon through deviant art, which I also don't use, but look at from time to time. Man there's a lot of stuff out there.
If you don't know what I'm talking about, Hasbro rebooted the MLP franchise blah blah blah.
Just get on youtube and do a search for Rainbow Dash or MLP FIM. The color choices below should make sense.
Rainbow Dash's body is kind of a sky blue. Her mane is six colors. So that's what I had to work with.
Red = alt. Orange = waterpump (FC)
yellow = front cover (still cleaning it)
green = side plates (they were already painted for another project)
blue = housings
purple = oil pan and inspection covers (not pictured).
Most of the time, if you were going to do a bunch of colors like this, your first thought would be to do each side plate and housing a different color, starting with the front cover as the first color. In this case red and finishing up with purple. It makes sense, but then when you look at it, some parts like rotor housings are bigger than the side plates, and the front cover is down and forward making it harder to see. This could be a problem as not all colors would be equally reprisented. So what if it was yellow; the brightest color, instead of red; the first color? Maybe it would work better. So if I followed a logical pattern going from the top down, the highest point is the alt followed by the waterpump, then the front cover and/or front iron would be the next color. Lastly the oil pan is the lowest point and as long as the engine so there's lots of surface area, but it's down really low. Now fortunately since the three side plates were already painted for a previous project which fell through, it made further sense to set up the colors this "other" way. Unfortunately you will have an orange waterpump connected to a green side plate with no yellow buffer in between. Same goes for green directly to purple on the rear plate. However I feel the finished product will still look a lot better than if I had gone the simple route and went front to back. Or even painted the bellhousing purple. Eek! What if I didn't like the color scheme? I'd have an annoying painted tranny that I'd have to strip and recolor silver. That was a strange choice of words.
I'd like to think I made the mentally advanced choice. I guess we'll all find out together once I stack this thing in a few days.
Yes I'm feeling weird about posting this on the forum. It's kinda supposed to be for my sister who loves MLP FIM. It's a decent show that's not terrible. Check it out.

I'm completely clueless as to what that show/meme is, but it reminds me of one of those Harlequin VW's. Interesting paint scheme, and a bold choice, I must say!
Even if you initially think, "What the hell have I done?" you'll probably like it in the end. After seeing an '05 Shinka RX-8 when it came out, I thought it would be great to paint my TII in the same "Black Cherry Metallic." After I finished I said, "Oh ****, it's purple!" I ended up really liking the color though, especially when the sun hit it and all the red flake came out.
Anyway, I look forward to seeing this when it's put together.

Jeff, i have a daughter that is really into Rainbow Dash and the rest of the pony gang.. not so much a fan of the ponies..
i am however a fan of what you are working on! i notice a few things.. S2 S model (looks to be manual mirrors) with aftermarket sunroof buuuuut the oem plus wheels. picking the lightest of the bunch eh? i also noticed the oddly short charcoal canister..never seen one so short...

Man, you have *ALOT* of Projects. I don't know how you can keep track of them all.
It can't be easy...or cheap.
As far as your "Rainbow/Punky Brewster" car.
When you finish it, get a vehicle wrap like this:

lol, that's cool! it'll be interesting to see how that rainbow thing works out, maybe each housing gets a different color?
its funny not only is peepers also an 82 S model, but its also U2 blue, i was thinking since sevenstock is on holloween this year, peepers could go as a honda civic, but maybe we should match?

The cheap part is I only had to buy one color, the purple, to make this rainbow colored nightmare a reality.
I like the punky brewster idea. Hadn't thought of that. I'm wondering when the 80s nostalgia is going to hit critical mass like 50s nostalgia did in the 80s, and all of our clothing styles and hair styles will shift from their current ugliness to something lighter and nicer looking. Even current new cars are all colorless turds or shades of grey and if they are colored, it's always the boring white, black, red or blue with the occasional goldenrod thrown it. I don't care for goldenrod. I like the daytona yellow engine paint above, or the competition yellow mica of the 93 FD...
Anyway it was my pleasure to take on such an oddball project like this. My hope is not only will it be colorfull, but it will do a quarter mile in ten seconds flat. Oh sorry that's another meme, related to the character.

My clothing and hair styles are NOT ugly! I'm almost as fabulous as Rarity. Maybe I should theme my RX-7 after her.

Do it! I thought about theming the white REPU after her. And my red REPU after Pinkie Pie (it's faded to more of a pink now lol). Gotta get some vectors of their cutie marks made into vinyl stickers... Ok I should just stop.
Hey season 2 started today. The coolest part is they got John De Lancie to voice the villian. He played Q on Start Trek TNG and totally hit the mark here. I think even PercentSevenC will have to watch MLP FIM now.

Here's a little inspiration for when it comes time to do the exterior, courtesy of JDM land (slightly NSFW):

Just gotta find someone to make some gigantic MLP vinyls.

Ok I've got a mini update. The front cover I was going to use turned out to be bad. Some idiot previous owner took one of those stupid air powered scuffing pads and really did a number on the gasket surface. It is not flat and could leak. Especially around the OMP feed hole. So I had to grab another front cover and go through the cleaning process all over again. Burned several hours, but worth it. This front cover is a slightly lighter '81-'82 version so I guess it's year-correct for the car. The nicest thing is the gasket surface is pristine. All I had to do is lightly run a box-cutter razor blade across it to clean off any residual gasket material. The OMP lever was rusted in place though, so it went in the trash (it's not rebuildable, guys) and the nice R5 one will go on. This one has the adjustable set screw so I can set it to the 9 o'clock position when I go to an aftermarket intake. If it stops raining I can paint it today.

If someone had made a thread like this a couple months ago, I would not have known what it was all about.
kentetsu, how does this early rendition make you feel?
This was going to be for someone who likes video/monitor stuff. The aluminum painted rotor housings represent the end result; white.
RGB. Get it? The primary colors of light... tap tap tap is this thing on? An alternative would be CMYK, for someone else who's into printers. The rotor housings would be black. Anyone wanna take on that color scheme? I prefer the RGB myself.
But no, the six color Rainbow Dash is what I've commited to. I'll see if I can get the front cover painted today. Then you'll puke rainbows when you see it stacked. I know I will. Better start eating skittles.

Ah there's that Rarity picture again. She's pretty hot.
Ray, I think the early ones are called "My Pretty Pony". I learned that recently while reading an interview with Lauren Faust, the creator of this latest pony fad.
So now you've seen the RGB, where the irons are colored but the housings are standard silver/aluminum. I gravitate toward this "look" because it always comes out looking good.
Take for example the engine that recently went into the red REPU. Figured red and silver would look great. It's a little like a candy cane, but it looks really good.
Now get ready to hold on to your lunch. I'm not sure I like the direction this is going. I might have to change it. Or part of it.
Too much blue and too much Ray Green? Sorry, couldn't resist. Those colors certainly dominate. I'm open to suggestions.

I would never do this to my own car, but I love how vibrant those colours are. will you be matching everything else in the engine bay or just blacking it all out?
my suggestion for a colour change would be to re-do the rear iron in orange and then break up the harsh red on the alternator with green in the centre of it.
have fun!

Thanks for the suggestion! And also welcome wizzurp! You're a real man!
I'm reminded of the lesson learned in episode 14. When you try to please everypony, you end up pleasing no pony. The original vision was to create a subtle but noticable rainbow color effect in the engine bay. The first way I thought of to get there was front to back: red to purple, painting each component. But then I realised that's what anyone would do. So to combat this, and because the irons were already painted, I'd save time by doing each component in its own color. Only problem is there's way too much green and way too much blue. Not enough red, and you're right the red alternator would look better if there was something to break it up. I didn't paint the pulley or fan because they were nice looking already, but they're overpowered by the red and you hardly see them.
Looking at some pictures of Rainbow Dash, the mane colors are just narrow bands. That's it! That's the solution. I can do that. It will be far more subtle this way. Not so overpowering and off balance like it is now.
If there was some neutral color to break it up perhaps in between each color, it might work. Since the tranny is a nice silver/aluminum color already, and we know how nice painted engines look when the aluminum parts are done in the standard "aluminum" color, it's starting to make sense to my sleep deprived brain. Only colorise the iron and steel parts... keep all the aluminum parts their standard bright aluminum color!
Now can I salvage this tropical storm?
alt band stays red, the rest of it gets redone in silver/aluminum
WP impeller stays orange. The wp housing gets stripped and probably repainted in aluminum
front cover gets stripped/redone to aluminum
front plate = yellow
intermediate stays green
rear plate = blue
both rotor housings stripped/redone in aluminum
oil pan and inspection covers stay purple
The rear plate being blue with purple inspection covers will add an extra dimension of color shift that's also still subtle and you can see it from the top!
Ah sweet success! I can sleep now.
