Radio that only works when it feels like it.

Being to poor to buy a decent CD deck, I have to suffer with the stock radio and lousy reception.
I just got the car back on the road a few months ago; it had been sitting on and off for about 3 years. The latest problem is, the radio only comes on every once in a while. If I turn the ignition off and on again, sometimes it will fire up and play. Other times, I just have to mess with it until it finally works. The antenna works everytime (I'm worried about burning the motor out from all the on/off tests) and the equ. bar lights up as well. Is this a common problem I've seen several posts on stereo-related problems but i don't know how unique this is.
Also, on the off-hand chance it does work, it has static from hell when I first turn it on and crank up the volume. I heard that cleaning the dial connnection can help this; any info on what that involves? Mine is super-glued on

I used to have the stock radio

I also had static from hell--My friend told me to get that cleaner stuff from a local rat (radio)shack... I didn't need to do this cuz I had just gotten my new deck. As for not turning on, I have no clue--maybe open the radio up and check from the inside (bad connection, dirty, etc)?

Hope that helps...

My stock radio did many strange things. See if you need to replace the cig. lighter fuse. (and while you are looking see if any other fuse needs replacing). That's what fixed my problems.

funny that you mention that because my cig lighter doesn't work either.

I'll check it out, thanks!

No problem. Yeah, my cig lighter didn't work either. The radio would only turn on a christion gospel station unless i turned on the head lights. LOL I thought at first it was a wiring problem, but for some fluke mistake I though I would check the fuses and I found my cig fuse was blown so I replaced it and everything worked.

Joe,

I "might" be able to find a radio for you. Give me a yell.

Slap the dash near the radio. Probably a shitty connection. This is why I solder EVERYTHING rather than just twisting the wires together or using crimp on's.
