Race/Street budget build up. Question
Ok I am building an 83 GSL for mainly autocross, but it will see some street use from time to time. Plus I plan to drive it to and from autocross. I plan to street port it and I have heard that the 79 intake will give a bit more power. And I have a 79 parts car. I want to put a holly or some other intake on but as stated above this is being done on a tight budget. Now what I need to know is of all the emissions gear that is on the 79 and 83 motors what do I need to keep and what can I discard? I plan on running a cat and an air pump to get the car through emissions testing but will remove them for the rest of the year. I know that it is a bad idea to just rip everything out, just to clean up the engine bay, so I would like to know that is necessary and what is not. I just want to simplify things a bit if possible and still have the car run well or better. Thanks.

Good luck. When you remove one emissions component (let's say the air pump), you're going to effect all other components as well. Emissions control is a fairly intricate process and as such requires quite a bit of interacting between different things. If I were you, I'd leave the emissions equipment alone until you can commit to discarding it all. When you get a new carb, then ditch all of it. Until then, just replace all the vacuum hoses with silicone tubing and get it back to near-stock. That way, it will run optimally for what it is (a street car that gets track time).
My solution was to register somewhere that didn't have emissions. Very easy (at least in WA) and very worry free.

I thought that might be the case. Thanks. If I use the 79 carb and intake mainfold is it going to work with all the emmisions stuff for the 83? Is it worh it to run the 79 carb.
