quick rear end question....

can you swap rear axles between the gsl (4x110) and gsl se (4x114.4).

not the whole housing, but can i put the 4x114.4 axles be put in the older gsl housing and dif.

I have a lsd 4x110 rear end that works great, and a 4x114.4 rear end that the lsd s toast. was thinking the 4x114.4 axles in the working lsd housing would be good. to go along with the big ft end swap.

the axle housing is the same for the 84-85 disc brake cars. so the axles interchange.

the 81-83 disc brake axle housing is different, as it uses smaller bearings

I thought the GSL diffs and subsequently the axles had a different spline count than the GSL-SE?

Edit: after a quick search guess not, must have been talking about the small bearing vs. big bearing.

The 81-83 and '84-85 diffs are the same except for the side gears, so if you're confident that you can pull a diff apart, you can disassemble them both and swap the late gears into the early case.

Or for that matter, if you're pulling it apart that far, you can do a cheap "regrip" and buy two friction plates. GSL-SE had only one friction plate per side, GSL had two (the -SE had an extra steel plate to make up the gap) so you can put a new friction plate in a GSL-SE to replace the extra steel and be good to go. Or do what I did and stick a .010" bearing shim underneath the end of the stack where it won't see any twisting loads. Two .010 basically made my worn out diff a spool, one brought the breakaway torque up to about 120ft-lb.

I have a few Series 3 disk rears, I don't know what started life as GSL and what was GSL-SE anymore. I have two sets of GSL-SE axles and two sets of GSL axles and they've probably all been swapped into the other at some point.

Which reminds me, I really need to stick new bearings on my other set of -SE axles.

Hmm, somewhere I traded a Series 3 disk rear for a Series 2 disk rear, bare housing. But I have no S2 axles, and the only diffs I have are one bare spool. Can't use the stuff, but don't want to pitch it either, you know?
