I have removed the "rats nest" of emissions equipment on a few that I have owned, but unless you are installing a"bigger and better" intake system it may not gain you anything.
The model GSL-SE, built in 1984-85, had the larger engine with more torque. Mazda is very conservative, and they decided to beef up the suspension, with larger axles front and rear. Rather than make two different types, they just made the suspension the same on all 1984-85s. The -SE models have heavier brakes.
The 84-85 cars have a completely different interior, with different headliner, door panels, dash and seats, and a much improved heating system. The base models have manual heater controls, the GSL and SE models have electrical heater controls. The instrumentation is much better than the older cars. The only thing I personally don't like is the gold colored bezel around the heater controls, stereo and shifter, with some colors. I think it looks fine on my beige car with the brown interior, but I painted it to match the dash on the red one.
Some will say it is personal preference, but I have owned them all, and I would never consider anything but the 84-85. They are much more refined in many ways. I have two - both GSL models, one with a hopped up rotary and one with a V8. They are the best sports cars you will get for the money.

Also it sounds like you may be having clutch issues, I would check the clutch master reservoir. see how much fluid you have, it actually sounds like a bad clutch master or a bad slave cylinder could be causing your difficulty changing gears.

Maybe you didnt read correctly because i said AUTO and it does shift gears nicely, its just takes putting the engine at 650 rpms in first before it moves at all. Thanks for all the hints, i have to check some things out. Only thing that i dont understand, is that you say "3" cats? I had look yesterday and there was only one. The one on the elbow coming down from the engine. Yes il check the secondaries for sure, btw, any links to a how to time these engines or how to tune the jets ect?

^ Well that's your reason right there. The only reason it's so slow is because its automatic, and as we all know, automatics suck up a large amount of an engine's torque... and we also all know how much low end torque a rotary has... You should definately look into swapping a 5-speed transmission into the car, it will make it a lot quicker and way more fun to drive.
They aren't exempt from having emissions equipment, they are exempt from having an emissions test. This means that you have to leave in all the factory emissions equipment. If the MTO stops you, and notices that you've removed the cats (they probably don't even know what a rotary engine looks like, let alone the air pump or ACV) they can give you some hefty tickets. That being said, the first thing I did to my RX7 was pull the cats, ACV, and air pump off the engine. I'm going to weld a dummy cat into the car when I get the chance.

LOL ya but if i have an auto i wont burn off the tires, thats always a bonus. Because i know i would with a manual. Im sure that the auto doesnt make the car 5 seconds slower from 0-60. Btw, how hard would it be to do the 5 speed swap?
YA same here in bc. But the DOT's around here say if you have a muffler its good to go, even when you get one inspected. Even a bottle counts as a muffler. Good ole boonies. All three of my last cars were straight piped. Btw, i hear a little psh psh psh when the car is idleing. I think its just a small hole in the exhaust but its pissing me off because it sounds like its coming from the exhaust mani. The only car i could find was one that was bolted almost right to the bottom of the exhaust mani, i think they put in new exhaust and said **** the old cats and only replaced one, in that case, where are the vaccum lines that come off the intake mani for the cat's. Id like to see if one was plugged. Btw i got some pictures.
I have a question. We did a little trick in our honda carbed engines where we locked the timing in the dizzy so that we had hotter spark the whole time, intead of having a vaccum advance, it just runs hot all the time. Which totally gave me 2 seconds in my crx. It helps alot and gives you better fuel economy.
Plus how do you time these engines? Trial and Error?
How do you know if the secondaries are opening?
