Quick A/C question, could be fun

Ok, I know we just had a big discussion about the R134a conversion kits and such so maybe someone can help me. So I finally got around to doing it and tracking down some elec. issues with the system. Worked fine for a bit. Now, it works every so often. If the compressor engages, the system works until I shut it off, but a good bit of the time it just doesn't do anything. Oddly enough it seems to work more frequently when it is hot out.

Wondering if maybe I have too low of pressure (small leak or something) and when it is hot out, pressure increases and it is enough to let the system run (it seems like it isn't quite as cold anymore, but I can't really tell for sure). Where is the low pressure switch located. Is it possible to just jumper that real quick and see if the system works fine. I don't really have any tools to test pressure and stuff like that. Or any other ideas anyone can think of? Another good way to test pressure? I don't want to overcharge it either.

Thanks people.

I'd like to know the best way to go, too. My 85 is not as cool as it should be, I think about 1 can low. Freon is about $60 a can, there's a conversion kit at walmart for about $30, and my dad showed me a can of stuff that you can add to the freon system for about $10.
What to do?

Are you talking about the FR-12 stuff or something like that?

I'll get the can from my dad tomorrow & let you know. Supposedly, you can just dump it in on top of your freon already in the system. He says it worked great on his toyota, cost about $10.

You can mix 134a and r12 and pretty much any refrigerant to any other one, just gotta use the right amount and the correct oil.

The high pressure switch should be just in front of the left side firewall attached to the evap inlet pipe. Your problem sounds more like the relay isnt acting reliably. On a day when it doesn't trigger you can try jumping the clutch to build pressure then seeing if the switch will start it, or just check the relay for that 12v trigger.

Ok, I think I'm about a can low..if I add a can of this stuff to it, do I need to add oil of some kind? I'm really ignorant of ac stuff.
Thanks

Did you ever get the R12 substitute and try it?

Found my problem today. Relay on the driver's side fender is gone. The 4 connection one. Anyone know where I can get a replacement for that one?
