Quick AC question

Ok, so the AC on my '85 GSL-SE is all there and untouched, only problem is that the clutch isnt engaging. I expect it to need charging, and probably repair but Im just wondering how I can get it to engage temporarily so I can see if its worth fixing the clutch wiring, and taking it all to the next step.

The compressor has one little black wire leading up to the vicinity of the pulley/clutch assembly...Is this the +12 V source to engage the clutch?

If so, could I just run a jumper from the battery to that black wire (fused of course..I know all to well how important fuses are....but thats another story) and see if the AC is kickin? If that little wire isnt for the clutch, what am I looking for?

From what I recall when working on mine, you are correct. Jumper that to 12v to see if the clutch is working. Just remember, it isn't engaging for a reason, so don't run it too long. You can chew up the compressor running it with no oil.

Ya, I just wish I knew why it isnt engaging...does the AC system have any failsafe features built into it? Would the compressor stop engaging if the pressure in the system is too low?

On many systems there is a low pressure switch (I believe it is on the rec/dryer on the 82RX, not sure about yours) to keep your compressor from turning on if there is low refrigerant pressure. That is why prior reader suggested just jumping the clutch directly, but you do run the risk of damage or further damage if you are also low on oil.

There are typically high and low pressure cut off switches in AC systems. So, try the clutch real quick, then check pressures and so forth if the clutch is good.
