Question Question about timing.

I have an underdrive pulley on my SE, but aren't running the dual alternator one that came with it. The instructions for the pulley said to set the timing while at 4,000 rpm.

At this speed, the stock timing was right off the scale on the new pulley and had to be toned down quite a bit (15-20 degrees if I remember correctly).

The car runs fine, and isn't real frenetic at high rpm like it used to be, but I'm wondering if going back to stock timing would yield more power?

I'm fine with it the way it is, but any chance to increase performance/gas consumption ya know

I'm not sure why you adjusted the timing in the first place. The pulley doesn't affect the distributor drive gear.

So there's no good reason to retard the timing from stock when putting an underdrive e-shaft pulley on?

I don't think so. All the underdrive pulley does is slow the alt and waterpump. You'll have less cavitation above 6500RPM (or whatever the figure was), but more of a chance to overheat in slow driving or at idle. Your stereo system (if any) will drain the battery when the headlights etc are on.

Who told you to retard the timing anyway? I always thought you're supposed to advance timing slightly for more performance.

Ya know, it sounded like bullshit to me when Jeff from Mazda Racing told me that over the phone, I'm gonna find the sheet that came with it and post the actual figures. None of the belts on the instruction sheet fit either, I ended up buying a shitload of belts and returning the ones I didn't need...

I thought he had me retard the timing because it was in some way affected by the smaller, lighter pulley on the "crank". Like I said, the stock timing was right off the scale inscribed onto the underdrive pulley they sell/used to sell.

So some shop is giving out bad advice with their product? I'll steer clear from them.

Oh, ok. I see what the problem is now. I'm sorry to say it, but you got ganked.

I'd just like to say that I know nothing of the inner-workings of any of this (Robert vs Jeff vs Mazspeed forum), other than I recognise the name of the guy (not just because I have the same name, but from somthing I read earlier). And now your pulley problem is some real proof of this guy's "talents". See for yourself. http://www.mazspeed.com/forum/thread...d=48&styleid=1

Please post the sheet of the figures you got from this guy. I'm very curious to see why he'd recommend retarding timing for a pulley change.

When you sign the papers? When it's reviewed by a third party? How the hell should I know?

I have a question for you. Why are you acting so defensive? If you had really put this issue behind you, you wouldn't have even batted an eye at my post.

So what's up? Were you running a search for your name or something? Or just checking out the threads? You've been really active lately after a long absence.

Anyway, like I said, I know nothing about the details (inner workings) of the whole 'you vs Mazspeed vs somebody named Jeff' thing other than what I've read.

As far as I know, you've got a cool product for blowing through Weber carbs on 1st gens. That Jeff guy gives out bad advice to people who buy stuff from him (as seen in this thread). Oh, and the Maszspeed people have long memories. Again, that's all that I know from reading the posts here and on Mazspeed.

So just keep doing what you're doing. You have fans in the rotary community. Just finalize your divorce and move on.

I did miss you here. Welcome back!

As for Mazspeed, I once recieved flack for being a bit over zealous when it came to ignition stuff (mostly from Sterling). That's all behind me now (I'll buy a Sterling carb after I rebuild my one and only 12A). I do remember something Mike (the owner) once said. He'd make online life a living hell for anyone who does him wrong, or something to that effect (it was about three years ago). I don't think Kathy Atkins is allowed on his site either. I think she bad mouthed the ATF treatment or something (don't remember any details). I'd never put ATF in any of my engines. Hmm... what else was there? Oh yeah, I also had a phone coversation with Mike. We talked about the Atkins SC and I can't remember anything else. Um, oh he said it was the most bang for your buck for an RX-7, but denies the rotary's nice rev happy nature. I think that's it.

Wow, it's been a while.
