Pulling a 12a

Pulling a 12a
So I am suppost to go pull an engine out of a rex, problem is I don't have a cherry picker. I am a cheap bastard so I can't afford to rent one, so I was wondering is it possible to pull that thing out by hand, (with a 2x4 and some rope or something)?
Also, how should I move that thing around, just throw it in a tire or something? And of course any tricks or tips on how to get that thing out of there would be greatly appriciated.
THANKS GUYS!!!!!

Possible, yes. Recommended ? No. Got a shade tree with some good limbs ? Move it with a cart or sit it on a creeper since you don't have a rolling engine stand, I take it. Have a friend help you for beer.

Are you going to rebuild that engine or just swap it? If you were to swap it, I would first strip the engine completly down and then go rent a cherry picker for a couple hours. Then just pull the old engine and drop in the new. They really don't really cost that much to rent.
If you are doing a rebuild and you are too cheap to rent a cherry picker, you can get some chain, a 4x4 post or something, and a couple of buddies to lift it out. I would just worry about droping the engine on the car. I would suggest getting a cherry picker for the install though. It can be hard enough to line everything up with something supporting the engine (cherry picker, hoist). I don't think it is worth the time/effort to try to do the install without a picker.
Maybe also check your local section on the forum. You may be able to find someone close that would be willing to lend to their cherry picker.

Yea, it is going to be my winter project to rebuild and port it out, and just learn and play with it. And I got a big somoan guy that works with me to go help me lift it out.

i'd go for a come-along and a nice piece of chain around a large tree limb, metal swing set, rafters in the garage... anything high enough to work...
or make a H out of 2x4 and use 3 other guys and lift it out lol... good luck on that one
oh yes and when you get it out, put it in a tire and it'll be fine, did that with a truck engine I rebuilt, never really left the tire and the floor until i was down to the block and needed to rebuild it...

well, if your too cheap to rent a cherry picker.......
how you gonna afford a rebuild kit?
a ***-along you can pick up for $20 or so. would be the easiest cheapest way. a couple buddies with a 4x4 can work also. but then you chance banging the engine bay, herniating a disc, pulling a groin , etc.. good luck how ever you do it. and good luck on the rebuild.

I pulled mine out without an engine hoist. My brother, a friend, and I pulled engine and tranny out by hand. Me and friend on each side and brother stood on the car and pulled on rope in middle. Also note that the radiator was removed.

I figure the cheaper I go now the more I have to spend later. The engine and everything on it, (carb and manifold, alternator, water pump, emissions, oil cooler, mounts, flywheel, clutch, supposidly everything) all togeather is only costing me 175 and a 6 pack for the help.

funny this is asked as i just finished doing this with 2 buds a couple nights ago with a 2 by 4 and a nylon strap everything was removed from engine bay tranny was off as well. i would reccomend drinking after you get it out though.

I have found it easier to go ahead and pull the tranny out with the engine, that way you can clean the tranny up, replace the seals if needed. I would recommend renting a cherry picker if you can. Might save you some unwanted dents in the car and possibly someone's fingers. Sometimes the cheapest way ends up costing you more in the long run. I have found that an engine stand isn't much use for a rotary. They only weigh less than 300 lbs, so not too hard to move around once they are out.
