I am pretty sure it's just the bellhousing that I need to replace.

Alex, now I'm scared.. Have you taken the clutch out of the car to examine yet? Think a strap let loose on the pressure plate or maybe some of the screws backed out? I'd like to see some pictures of the carnage. Now I'm thinking I should drop the trans and inspect the clutch.

So the scatter shield was just a homemade deal? I'd like to see a pic of that also if you have one. How thick is it?
Cam, I just saw a video of the last run. I definately missed 4th and over-revved. If you're gonna keep the car on the street then you're probably fine. Just set the RPM limiter on the Haltech.

I am taking the engine and tranny out in a couple of weeks, to replace the broken parts and make sure the engine wasn't hurt.

The shield is 1/4 inch thick steel plate. I just ordered the last one. Many people get them custom made.

BTW...

How do I convert Quicktime to WMV? Where can I host a couple of the runs?

The sky is the limit when you don't have a rev limiter. I have mine set to 8300 and on datalogs I've seen it overshoot to 8600 (inertia?). I think I'll kick it down to 8000.

That's a real mess you have there Alex. I'm assuming all the oil on your trailer and on top of the rotor housing is from shrapnel puncturing the oil filter? Hope that's it.. Is there any part of the bell housing still attached to the engine?

Wow.....

I wish my car could do that!! Unforunately I don't think my car will ever detonate clutches and bellhousings like that.

That's the only kind of damage I would actually enjoy fixing.

Mount that on your wall!!!

Not likely. Take a look at the profile view of a 1st gen. Even with a 13B, the clutch plate plane is too far forward to take your legs off. In a crazy event, it might mess up your feet, but the likelyhood of it coming back to even your ankles isn't very probable. It's still a great idea to have a scattershield, if nothing else than to protect innocent bystanders.

It was scary. A friend of mine got it on video.. Further inspection reveals that the oil filter was NOT puctured. The oil all over in thr pics is the power steering line that was cut.

you make it like loosing your feet wouldnt be as bad as loosing them from the shins down. either way its going to hurt like ****. even if your lucky enough for it to miss your feet, i wouldnt want to take that chance..

I'm not saying it would be a day in the park, or that it wouldn't be a bad thing. I'm saying that the probability of the driver being injured by a clutch failure in a first gen RX-7 is highly unlikely when the engine is located close to the stock mounting position.

Relax.... Obviously it wasn't meant that way. Nowhere did I mention anything about injuries or loss of limbs.

I was impressed with the fact his car's ablitilty to destroy components. Not everyone's car has reached that power level.

Damn.

NHRA,requires a fire bottle too DF.. throw that transmission out, flywheel too. your clutch went and the debrie took out a cast iron scatterschield ????? **** !
steel flywheel, light, grade 10 or better bolts to the e-shaft, grade 10 or better bolts for the clutch too. and grade 10 or better for the drive shaft / flange. add a few extra lbs of air for the front tires, and you maybe could add some kind of bracing in the engine area. i've got a battery cut off switch i'll sell you. NHRA legal.
what,,, no cruise control to go with the A/C, LOL

When clutches go they typically get thrown up and out, not back. With the flywheel located forward of the firewall a clutch failure is not likely to take out your feet. At least not on the first bounce. If parts bounce around in the bellhousing or off your hood or the ground then it's anyone's game. Lots of guys weld 1/4" thick steel on the firewall around where the pedals are.

A flywheel in a 1st gen blew up @ the Runoffs last year and it tore up everything on the same plane as the flywheel. Fuel lines, brake lines, hood, etc... Driver was OK not hurt.

Media Cleaner (I think they just call it Cleaner nowadays) exports to pretty much any format known to man except for a few goodies like Pixlet - and it should even do Pixlet on a Mac running 10.3

Email if you need more help.

Glad you're okay.
