This is a myth.
1. anything more than about 3ft below ground level, the temperature is almost constant. Doesn't matter what the outside air temperature is.
2. those tanks hold a tremendous amount of fuel. It would take a ton of energy to even move the temperature 1 degree
3. The gas pumps report gallons, but the fuel is really measured on a mass basis (density compensated flowrate).
Here is what Omega says:

The density compensated flowmeters is something I didn't know though, so if that's correct you'd pay the same one way or the other, just get a little more into the tank.

Well i haven't started doing the hypermile method yet, but today i filled up after driving about 230km i used up about 33L of fuel, bringing me to about 16.45 mpg this is with quite a bit of spirited driving, on a street port i would say this isn't too bad as it stands right now. I'm going to try my best for this next little while to stay off the gas as much as possible to find out what it can really do. I'm not going to start off anything insane yet, but basically just staying under say 3500 rpm.

UPDATE:
Today I drove around for ***** and giggles. Honestly, this is kind of fun. I'm not going to drive like this as long as I own the car though. That would be horrible. Anyways, I racked up some good miles today, so far there is 49 on the dot.
Tire pressures all 40PSI
The weather right now is 88*f, partly cloudy.

2 items of advice. 1. Always fill up at the same spot for consistency. 2. The 2nd gens have a little light in the cluster that comes on when it's time to upshift for the best fuel mileage. This is of course, load dependent. In general, the light comes on between 1500-2000 rpm. Happy trails with your test.

i added some gas today and as i did i was like "hmm..hypermile..." so i did it all day, drove around to my jiu-jitsu, and around town for a few errands and what not, no keeping record tho :P, but i was just doing it for ***** and giggles, and i gotta say, i have a headache and my right foot is actually tired, it takes quite a bit of concentration, but it saved me from 2 possible wrecks lol.

Also, I forgot to mention on the last update. I was stuck in traffic for about 5-8 minutes, and short shifting at 2k rpm, and sitting, the carb didn't like. It started to load up, so I waited and got about 40 feet behind the guy in front, and cruised up to him in first @ 2500rpm. Still kept the RPMs low, but cleared most of the loading issue.

Page 3 bump!
Went on a drive today in the country, took the back roads.
Just cruised around, doin about 45 in a 55 the whole time.
Here is the stats so far:
All tires at 40, but rear passenger was at 38. Starting to think it has a leak on the valve stem or something.
89*F right now.

Thanks. It took me like 45 minutes to get to that road, then I was on it for about 20 minutes
lots of 35-45mph stop and go roads to get there and leaving there. when I got to that road, I stayed no more than 45. That way it can't be ruled as a highway run. Even had 4 stop signs I had to stop at.

Well, broke 200 miles today. Not as hot as usual, the weather still says it is about 79*F. Getting cooler, so better gas mileage should be around the corner.
Pumped the tires back to 40PSI, they all were down about 1PSI.
Did more "city" driving, as I had to run to the courthouse again today. Nothin like 3rd gear 20mph max. Light traffic, would say I was stationary for about 10 minutes total.
Here is the screenshot today:
I parked facing the garage door today, as opposed to just pulling straight in. Not sure if there was a difference in the gas angle...
