Problems unscrewing nut from pulley...
Ok i want to take off the front housing cover off my old dead 81. The nut that is in the center of the main big pulley is one hard bastard. I've already broke my socket wrench because of it and didn't even loosen it in the process. Does anyone know how to remove this, did they use some kind of tool to take it off.

Wait. you are lucky it broke. You gotta be careful with that. It hasn't happened to me, but understand that some kind of spacer on the inside of the shaft can fall down inside the engine of you are not careful. Do a search.

Hmm.....I have been ghetto tryin to get my FC engine apart. Can the nut come off with an impact gun? Mine has like 350 lb/ft of torque, and didn't budge it at all.

It's a 19mm bolt. A 1/2" drive impact wrench works great. I've also gotten one off with a long aluminum tube on a 1/2" drive ratchet.
The thing inside that you're supposed to be worried about is a thrust bearing. It'll slip down off its spacer and onto the E-shaft and can get crushed if you try to torque the 19mm bolt down. It can come apart and needle bearings will go into the oil pan. They're too big for the strainer, but small pieces can and will get sucked up through the oil pump rotors causing scoring and possibly broken rotors. I have an oil pump with a broken front rotor. It's kinda cool.

The engine I'm currently rebuilding is at a Mazda dealer right now, I gave up on that nut on the front pulley as well as the 54mm nut that holds the flywheel. I will be doing everything else myself though.
Can you give more details on that thrust bearing? Is it right behind the front pulley? How do I prevent damaging it? Thanks for the info.

I was going to say just use an impact gun on the lowest setting and dont hold it there for to long, it would get the job done just the same...

so thats why they say when taking off the front engine cover that it most be facing up because of that spacer. I think im just going to buy one of those 2 foot long socket wrenchs to take that bastard off. I cant really afford a impact gun being in school and all. After taking off that nut most the cover be pried off or does it slide off by itself.
