pressure in the oil pan?but not in the engine?

After various tests preformed by my self and helpful leads from you the forum members I realized that the oil pressure that was supposed to be going to the engine is getting bypassed to the pan, but oil is still getting up and past the filter. after a quick search hear and a read through of my mitchels on demand I belive my problem is related to the opcvs (oil pressure control valve spring), whats happening is when I crank the engine without ignition, pressure builds to about 1.5/2 psi, at first with a larger guage I could not realize this minor fluctuation I assumed that it was just low pressure as there was a slight reading , on a 10 psi guage it became rather evident that there was a complete pressure drop at about 2 psi after a few tries I noticed a slight hiss/pop as the pressure dropped, So I got my brother to give it a good cranking over while I inspected the engine area to see if I could determine the location of the noise, I held my finger over the vent on the oil filler tube as he cranked the engine over, pressure built up to about 2 psi and the dip stick almost jumped right into my eye.
anyway after all of that does this sound like I am on the right track?
and if I am what does it involve to repair any links or info would be great , I got 2 spare engines within 5 feet of me right now, one 84(might still be good) , and one 85(blown apex seal), engine in the car is an 85 all 12a's so if I can steal from one and give to another I might be able to get her going for the road trip.

Sounds like 2 problems. Since the oil pump pulls from the the pan, and you say it is being returned, bypassing the engine, there should be no presure build up. It should balance out. If the crankcase is pressurising, it is usually due to worn oil control rings and side/corner seals being bypassed by the combustion gasses.

For the oil pressure, drop the pan and remove the front oil control valve and the rear opr. Also check to see if the o-ring between the front cover and front iron has squeezed out.

engine is a brand new rebuild with all new seals , I dont know exactly what is going where but pressure builds at ops where I have a hand held 10 psi guage, and in pan at same time.

sorry about the miss leading title.

Ah, I couldn't remember if you had the no oil pressure thread on the fresh rebuild or not. Same thing applies, drop the pan and check what I posted above.
