Power Steering

Ok so i know i'm adding weight and different things and i dont mind not having it. but GF is a little bitty thing and is having trouble turning the wheels. So my question is... I have a 12A in an '83. Is it possible to add power steering or am i just out of luck on this one. I know i need to adjust my steering box right now because i have about 3 or 4 mayb more inches of play in the wheel.

I too have been trying to put PS in my 83. So far I have found 2 ways, raid the equipment out of a gsl-se. Or raid the pump and column off a 626. Thats what I have found Im currently going fo rthe 626 route because they are cheaper and easier to find than gsl-se's.

Would you mind pointing me in a direction of where you found your information. Arcives seems to be no help atm. But i will keep looking. Guess will be a good first project to add weight to my car. Then that will make me start a new on that will make me reduce the weight.

Ok let me scratch the old boggin for a minute..........
Ok first of all most of the research I did was at first on the net. What I found is most people didnt even bother with this mod cuz they got plenty of upper body strength. Me im a big guy, and my woman all 109 lbs of her cant steer the thing to save her life. I wanted a smaller steering wheel to make for a more comfortable ride. The firs thing I did was search the forums, and I can tell you all I ever found was a buy the steering column and pump from a gsl-se. Thats like $400 man! Plus why would you want to goto a salvage yard and desicrate an even more rare gem these days! So I used my "Redneck Ingenuity" and decided that there must be a better option. I yanked the original steering column out and took note of the way it all bolted up. Also I did some Haynes manual research and found that the 7 used a recirculating ball style steering. Well if you look closely at the way the steering gear box bolts onto the (I believe they are called) Pits man arms? ITs just a simple stud nut and bolt. I also had a lightning bolt of genius realizing that mazda recycles freaking everything! So I set forth unto the almighty salvage yard wiht steering column in hand. Well I wandered over to the mazda section ( A massive 6 cars!) well I noticed on this ugly 626 that it had the exact same rearview mirrors as a 7. Upon closer examination I noticed it shared the same turning signal assembly. Well I popped the hood on this old beast, and examined the stearing gear box, and what do my wondering eyes see? I near perfect match I tell myself! Its connects the exact same way as the stock 7, the only difference is its connected to a powersteering pump. Well if we go into the Power Steering Fundamentals we learn quicly that all it takes to make power steering a properly suited gear box and a hydraulic pump. All you technically need is the gearbox/Column because any pump will work. Dont worry about running too much PSI just find a similar car in weight, and yank the pump. I mean its all pretty darn universal in my opinion, albiet a few minor things. After you got the column out of the 626 I believe its a 86-?? Just look for a 626 with 7 rear view mirrors. As for the pump find whatever is cheapest! Then have a custom mounting bracket made either by yourself or a local shop. Its really not that expensive, but I assume you either lack the skills or equipment to do it yourself........ Then have a set of custom hydraulic hoses made to fit your application. If you live in a farming area there is a tractor place not far from you. If you live in a suburban or metro area there is still some locations that deal with custom hydraulics for heavy equipment, and they can fix you up! All in all the project should cost no more than $150 So obviously its cheaper to find a 626 and chop it up, versus listening to your children wonder why in gods name thier old man chopped up one of the most saught after cars in knowledge to get Power steering...... its your call what to do man.......My IM is drozhenbane@yahoo.com or you can PM me........

Thx man. I will take a look into it.

About the knowledge or know-how... i'm lacking in alot of areas when it comes to cars. But i have fallen in love with the enigen in this car. The rotory by far imo is better than a piston one hands down.

I live in an apt in ATL area. I have no place to work on a car. So everything that i have to do will have to be done in one day as far as breaking down a car and putting it back togeather. but will see what my new place holds.

But if there is someone in ATL willing to lend me some space on the weekends or what have you i will trade for labor/helper to learn and also computer work for those that don't understand the damn things. my IM also is sdragoon1979@yahoo.com so anyone is welcome to contact me. I think that this car will end up taking over my life the way games have in the past years.

thats good to know. nice find on alternative parts. i know it would be hard to source them from an -se because not all of them came with it.

The Mazda 626 shares a very large amount of parts from our little 7 here. Mostly Steering/Suspension and electrical......So go find one and work out a deal with the salvage yard owner to raid parts at your leisure for a fixed rate! You may want to hurry with the price of steel these days alot of them are finding thier way to the crusher! AS for the project being done in one day.....I dont see that happening man! IMO its at least a three day weekend job! You may just want to rent a storage unit that will fit a car inside and work on it in there. Or look around for a fellow 7 owner in your area you would be surprised how 7 owners stick together to help one another out!
