Is it possible to put a 2nd gen trans into 1st gen SE without modifications?

Can an 89-91 RX7 NA tranny be transplanted into an 84-85 RX7 GSL-SE without any modifications? Has anyone already done it or know if there are any problems with the swap or is it just a straight swap with no modifications /tweaking?

Let me know.

thanx, rotarypwrd

I believe the only thing needed is to use the bellhousing off of the SE tranny.

IOW, replace NA bellhousing with SE one. Aftre that, should bolt right up and you should have no problems.

No, leave the bellhousing alone. All you need to do is swap the tail housing and shifter housing and it will bolt straight up.

Nah, it only applies to the n/a gearboxes. With turbo gearboxes you need to modify the gearbox mount and shifter location, use a custom tailshaft and run the appropriate clutch.

Thank you for the input everyone, but you all have left me with 2 scenarios? They can't both be right, can they?

scenario 1- all that needs to be done is swap the FC NA tranny bellhousing with the 1st gen SE bellhousing and it should bolt right in......or

scenario 2- all that needs to be done is swap the tailhousing and the shifter housing and it should bolt right up

.......so which is it? Please someone (experienced, or has done the swap w/o problems) settle this argument. I can not afford guesstimates right now. Let rotary trans swap expertise speak now...........

let me know which is it?

thanx in advance, rotarypwrd

Didn't I just say that you don't need to touch the bellhousing?

All Mazda rotaries from 1974 onwards share the same bellhousing bolt pattern.

Yeah listen to him. I was thinking 12A, not 13B. Bellhousing should work fine.

That would be correct.. Shorten the shift linkage and make a custom crossmember or modify the stock one.

I had a TII driveshaft shortened and put a the correct yoke to bolt up to the rear end also.

It doesn't matter whether it's 12A or 13B. It's still the same.
