Unhappy Please help rx drives jerky and then the gas pedal kills the motor.

Im having trouble maybe someone has experienced this. I have an 81 rx7 12a It idles fine but there is a delay when I push the gas when in neutral.its only a second or so and then it revs up. Also, as im driving the car will begin to jerk and sputter. Then its like it wont take any fuel. I push the pedal down and it seems to want to die, It eventualy does and I have to pull over and let it sit for a minute. Then it will start up and run for a little ( less than a mile) and do the same thing. I had some fuel leaking from the accelerator pump on the carb so I replaced the diaphram/ gasket. I thought that might be the problem but its still doing that. It seems to me like its flooding or something. But I dont know. Im really hoping its something little and easy to reapair. Any Ideas people? Im frustrated. Thanks, Todd

My car did the exact same thing, I fixed the accelerator pump and it drove fine after that.

I'm thinking fuel filter...
Sounds similar to the fuel starvation problem I had on the '85 Base when the filter was nasty...
Either that or your Carb needs some serious help...

It is at the rear on the drivers side of the carb, down by all the linkages. It is a nut threaded onto a spring loaded shaft. If you thread it in, it will squirt more gas, but it delays when the gas is squirted out. If you thread it out it will not delay as much, but it does not squirt as much gas. You have to find the right spot for it to accelerate smoothly.

Tried adjusting acc. pump

I tried to adjust the acc. pump but i cant seem to get it in the right spot. It seems to run better and delay less when I adjust to the right. of course this is when Im not driving it. When I drive it up the street I have the same problems. I tried adjusting the other screw about 4 inches to the left of the acc. pump. This one seems to increase the rpms. I think I dont know what the hell Im doing as far as adjusting the carb. Does anyone have advice or does anyone live near Ft. Benning Ga. that could lend a hand if I brought it by. Maybe theres something else wrong with it, I dont know. But I really think its just my carb.

I refer you to my earlier post...

When was the last time you changed the fuel filter?

It's easy to do (about 15 minutes) and cheap ($10)...

I'd lay odds that's the problem...

I fully gree with smnc, change the fuel filter its surprising what a difference it can make. With an old vehicle the fuel tank can be full of sludge so never run on a low on fuel and change your filter often.

I don't think so. Symptoms of a clogged fuel filter usually are sputtering at high rpm/loads, not what he describes.

Accel pump is not adjusted with screws. Those screws are the mix and idle screws.

Yeah I went out and tried adjusting the carb today and I realized where drifting rex was refering to for the acc. pump. I had been turning the Idle speed screw the whole time. After toying with it for over an hour and a half today, I finaly got the damn thing to start again. So now Im going to adjust the Idle speed and mixture screws tommorrow and If it starts and stays running Ill try adjusting the acc. pump. If that fails Ill take the most rcent advice on the fuel filter. I really appreciate all the advice. My wife keeps nagging me to sell the damn thing but Ive only had it for a couple months. I really think Its got to be a pretty simple problem. Ill post again when I get the kinks worked out. Todd

Loss of power to the fuel pump?
Bad alternator, ground or power connection?

I do believe its loss to the pump, I have run new grounds, and alt is running perfect and charging well. Today I will be running a new line to the fuel pump

The accel pump needs to be barely touching the diaphragm. Wouldn't hurt to change the fuel filter. Sounds like it's the a/p. I had the same problem with my holley when I first put it on. Adjusted the ap linkage to just touch the accel pump, and voila....problem fixed.
