You might wanna check the idler arm bushing before you go playing around with the steering box.

I did this adjustment on my mother's car recently. Here is some additional information you might find interesting. I bought the 1 9/16" socket as explained because I couldn't locate a 40mm one. This required additional work to the socket besides just getting rid of the chamfer. I had to grind out the inside of the socket to get the proper size. My nut measured 1.590". Spend the money to buy the socket. It was tight enough that any other method will probably round it off. Also the worm gear adjustment nut could not be adjusted with a 12" crescent wrench. I think the nut measured 1.820". I made a wrench out of 1/4" plate and my plasma cutter. Have fun with the adjustment. My mother appreciated it.

On another note....

I've got some play also, but I've also got a problem with the steering column. When I use the turn signal and turn, it cancels fine, but sometimes the steering wheel slides out a bit and then the turn signal cancelor no longer works (I have to manually turn off the blinker). I had read somewhere that this could be caused by a broken steering column, is that true? How would I determine what the problem is? BTW, If I turn the steering wheel so that the wheels are pointing straight ahead and push the steering wheel in gently, it slides back down and then the turn signal works fine and cancels fine. TIA.

The steering colum is a sleeve in a sleeve, with a plastic (I think) sheer pin holding them in place. That way, should you happen to smash yer face on it, the sheer pin will break, and you won't leave such terrible teeth marks on yer purdy steering wheel!

I think your pin broke, and I read about it alot here. Don't really know the fix for it.
