John64: For Your Second system...where did you get the install kit for the console, or is it a custom job? Also where did you get the guages?

I built the install kit myself. The gauges are Autometer (A/F, Oil Tep, Water temp)

Just found this thread and thought you might be interested in my subwoofer installation. I bought a Pioneer head unit and upgraded the existing speakers to Polk. I decided to use the existing amps and mounted 4 - 8" (4 ohm) subwoofers in the storage bins. Although each speaker is only driven by 25 watts the combined total is 100 watts going into a lot of cone area. Also since the speakers are right behind your back it doesn't take as much level to really make them thump! The whole thing cost about $100. and I got everything but the wood from: http://www.chokes.com/

I saved the bins so I can easily return the car back to stock. This system delivers so much bass that I have to turn the woofers way down or be blasted out of my seat!

Moods, I like it! I would love to do 4 10's back there. Oh, be prepared to hear for all those people who heard that its not a good place to put sub's and never did it themselves. They like to whine alot about something they have never done. Do you have any pictures of how you did it?

Having played with two 12's in various boxes, various firing angles and various placements throughout the hatch area, I'm here to say the above "ghetto" box was the loudest. It killed one of the speakers, though, because they are not a free air sub, but compressing that air in the back hatch and letting the wave bounce forward and resonate with the back of the speaker produces a serious hair drying effect. I had to pull my louvers for that brief-lived combo above...

Yeah, it's been brought to my attention that they are restricted access. They were originally posted in the DoO, which is not an open access feature of the Forum. I'll post them in this corner tonight when I get home.

I've read the opinions about speaker placement and here's what we (my husband and I) did. My hubby does audio mixing & mastering and worked in a world class recording studio for 13 years. I know, that sounds like bragging, but his background and experience were put to use in my car. He originally wired a set of his studio monitors in the car to see how the bass would sound in various parts of the car, pointing up, on the side, behind the seat, from the back ... etc. After driving around with his monitors it was apparent that it really didn't matter where they were, it sounded great! Bass, unlike highs, is not directional - it just goes everywhere, and the RX is a small space to fill. I'm not out to shake the china off the shelves of the houses I drive past ... I just like to hear everything in full range and solid.

The bins are stuffed with leftover rug padding and various other deadening stuff and the speakers are screwed directly to the wood; screwed directly to the metal (not boxed). I hooked the original front & real amps inputs to the Pioneer head unit's subwoofer output. It works great because the head unit allows for setting cross over point, sub level and HP filter on the full range speakers. We're crossing the subs over at 50hz.
