Pictures of my recent purchase

I finally had the chance to take pictures of the 1985 GSL-SE I just bought for $700.00 from a close friend. picture quality isn't the greatest but I'd love to know what you guys think. I don't think it's bad for the price!.....

Thumbs up

Congratulations on your purchase, the car seems to be in pretty
good shape and you can't beat that price.

You got yourself an SE, the best 7 you can find, in my opinion.
Enjoy it buddy.

Not sure what you mean by it's not a Honda....unless you mean adding things like ground effects and neon lighting which aren't going to happen:-). Nothing against those that like that sort of thing but I prefer my baby the way she is. I'll do some exhaust mod's and ignition mod's but nothing spectacular. Just want to restore it and make it look nice. Thank you for the feedback!..

All I know is it's the 13B engine. Other than that I have no idea. I'm still learning on how to tell the difference. BTW, do you know what people mean when the say the s4 or s5 engine? just wondering....

That looks like my twin!! You are going to have a blast with that car, mine has been around for a long time and i still have to drive the long way home everyday so we can spend a little more time together.

I believe the s4 and the s5 are @nd generation 7's. S4 being from 86 to 88 which has most parts that will bolt up to the GSL-Se with little hassle. S5 parts can sometimes bolt up with more a little more work. Good luck and have fun.

The car has 157,000 on it but the motor was replaced at around 110,000 with new motor from Mazda. I watched my friend put it in under the guidance of his uncle(a Mazda certified mechanic of 20+ years). The car runs good, just needs some TLC. It has a dent in the right front fender that is showing some rust and is missing the antennea. I have already checked the spare tire area and the area behind the storage bins and no signs of rust in either spot. Both bins still have the lids attached and functioning locks. Carpet is in pretty good shape. Steering wheel is in need of replacing and I believe those plastic pieces inside the steering column are also broken since the steering wheel moves in and out about 1 1/2 inches. Also needs a new cluth slave cylinder and the drivers side seat has a tear. I will try to get some better pictures for everyone sometime monday or tuesday, I work night shift the whole weekend so I'll post em as soon as I can. All in all I think for $700.00 I have a ride worth restoring and enjoying:-)!!

GSL SE are cool, I have owned about 9 of them and stripped about 6 more of them. I had a really nice one I sold to guy in New York and I have regretted it ever since.

Yup... You can tell from the plenum/dynamic chamber on top of the motor.
It's a stock 1st gen (Series 3) GSL-SE 13B 6-port FI

s4 and s5 refer to the series of the car.

1st Generation:
Series 1 is 78-80
Series 2 is 81-83
Series 3 is 84-85 (including your GSL-SE)

2nd Generation:
Series 4 is 86-88
Series 5 is 89-92

3rd Generation:
Series 6 is 93+

The motor you have, the 13B RE-EGI is generally considered to be the most durable rotary Mazda built.

The s4 and s5 motors both made more power and had Turbo versions too.

I'm kinda partial to my GSL-SE motor, myself...

Sounds like a great car! And an even better deal! I'm doing a complete teardown/re-buid/build-up of my GSL-SE in the spring...

Woking on my RX is my second favorite thing to do, right behind driving my RX...

.... Well third favorite

Check the floor directly behind the seats in front of the factory support, this is where our cars rust through the upper trailing arm mount, and if so it needs to be fixed asap.

Nice buy, looks like a solid car. Congrats

Yeah the sheer pin has been sheered. Had that on our '85 base model...

Congratulations on your purchase! Nice car!

What a great deal for $700.00!

Last Saturday I bought a '85 SE with 72k original miles! I paid $1,200.00.

My SE needs major TLC!

The paint is faded tan, no dings or dents (and will need to be repainted). There is virtually no exterior rust, only surface rust in a couple of scratches.

Interior needs restoring: Steering wheel, seats, carpet, rear plastic trim, radio, antenna, and a couple other misc. items.

The tranny needs to be rebuilt (bearing noise in first, second, third, and gone in fourth). The steering gear box needs adjusted or replaced. And needs tires really bad.

Other than that, it runs really good, much stronger than my 12A. I have put about 100 miles on it since Saturday, but I have not been driving this week (tires/time).

I will post some pictures of both the '84 GS and the '85 GSL SE this weekend.

Mike
