Pics of my 89 N/A swap project!
Well guys, I finally got some pics of my 89 N/A motor swap. I know I need to do some cleaning really bad.
Just a geneal picture of the intake manifold here:

When I do finally start the car, I'll make a how to on how to do the wiring.

hey thats a good idea for the crossmember on the tranny. my 84 gsl is an auto and i was trying to figure out what to do about that, is it onthere nice and snug? when you shift hard does it knock around? or have you even tested it out? how thick is the metal onthere?

well I havent been able to drive the car around yet, but it sure feels sturdy as hell.
I think it was 3/8" thick steel. That stuff isnt going to bend for anything!
The only part I hadnt thought of and I just put in today, was that with extending the mounts like that, you lower the hight of the transmission by 3/8". So I made another peice today, drilled it and stuck it in between the transmission and the mount itself. I did have to go get some longer bolts, and my shop doesnt have any metric bolts anywhere. So I had to use some standard bolts on it.

Its the stock 89 ECU! It took a long *** time to thin out that wiring harness. I'm pretty sure every thing should be working right, but I havent had a chance to start the car and test it.

Seeing you car jacked up, with the SE rims, and the engine swap...
Looks like mine!!
Yes, this is an old picture..

I've heard tons of horror stories about the 89 wiring but it really isnt all that bad. DF, I know you are practically imortal with that 13B-RE setup you have going there, so you probably know all this, but for everyone else...
The engine side of the harness does not need to be modified at all. You just need to plug it in. And and all the sensors are on that side. That part is really just plug in play. The modifing comes when you look at the second side of the harness.
That goes throughout the whole dash of the '89 and up to the battery. For me, it was just a simple matter of finding out what works with the '85 ecu out of the car.
To my suprise everything works. So you take the harness and completely un wrap it. Theres plenty of connectors on there, and its simpily a matter of "will I plug this into anything?" Theres the connectors, for the dash, headlights, and everything else. Including the fuse box system for the interior of the 89.
I just simpily removed what I obviously knew that I didnt need. But before I removed anything that hooked up to the ECU directly, I had to double check the pin out. I left wires out to connect my clutch switch off my old harness among other connections.
The end result after 2 garbage bags of usless wire, and 3 rolls of electrical tape later is a harness that is about the diamater of a small garden hose, compaired to the fire hose it used to be.

Did you use the SE front cover? What did you do for the OMP? Ive been considering to do the same swap for awhile and a freind of mine has been working on the same swap. He had aluminum welded onto the SE front cover then tapped in threads for it to fit.. looks OEM too

i really hope to have it running my next week. I'm getting my GSL-SE rear on friday, and I still have to order my redline gear oil from summit.
I'm supposed to get my tax refund this week as well. That should allow me to finish off the final part, that damn FC oil cooler.
To be honest, I'm like a kid on christmas morning with the project allmost being done. I dont even know what a good running rex should feel like. The only expierence I have driving one, is limping my car home on the blown 12a it had. I was flooring it (it was an auto) and the best it could get up a hill was about 8MPH.
I'd also like to take this chance to thank every one on the forum for helping me out. 500 posts ago, I didnt know **** about my car, and know I know what just about every nut, bolt, and electrical connector is in that car.
This project has made such an impact on me, that its made me decide what I want to do. Become a mechanic. Theres a program out here called the Ford asset program. Theres two different courses in this program, one that teaches you all you need to know and gives you job placement, in a ford, lincon, or mercury dealer.
The other one is just starting this year, and the whole program is based around mazda. I'll have a guarenteed job at a mazda dealership in two years, and after you graduate from this program, you make BANK! Some of my friends have gone through the ford side of it and are making $40K+ at the age of 21.
Its a great door that has opened up for me!

That looks awesome dude. When its all done you should do a howto on the whole thing, its on my very long term to do list What kind of exhaust are you going to run? What about the fuel system?
#24
well for fuel, its the stock GSL-SE fuel system and lines. That will change in the future, I just dont know when.
As for exaust, I have SE exaust manifold on there because I need to pass emissions. I'm going to get the testing out of the way probably a week after the car is running.
After I pass, I'm going to start with a RB dual pipe and presilencer system. Then I've got to put on a s5 lower manifold, so my aux ports will work correctly. Its the problem with port air on the s4 block that prevents me from doing this now.
One thing that I have discovered, is that With our FB's its a common thing to remove the rats nest, but its not done nearly as often on the FC's. I'm going to have to make up a way to take care of that problem.
