Question Parts and engine bay cleaning?

I was just wondering what other members used to clean their engine bay and/or parts? I know a bit of old fashion elbow grease is needed. What cleaners are commonly used? Metal wire brushes? Dremel tool? Hand held steamer from Home Shopping Network? LOL

np. might be a bit though as getting it running is a little higher on the list then making it shiny.

I just finished cleaning, prepping, and painting my engine bay. It was quite easy for me as I have nothing in there, so if you have stuff still on the firewall etc. it may be harder. I used "Castrol Super Clean degreaser". A gallon was going for 2.99 at the local parts store so I figured I'd try it. Worked great. Used a roll and a half of paper towels though
If you already have good paint underneath the dirt, just clean off the dirt and use a product called "Ting" with a scratch pad. This ruffs up the paint and removes all clear coat and road grime. Then, spray to your heart's content.
BTW, I used Dynamax undercoating for my engine bay (saw it a couple times in Jeeps around here). It looks damn good. Very uniform and doesn't look all crappy when dirty or scratched.
Good luck.

I haven't have to clean my engine bay other than a hose and some soap! But for my Merkur XR4ti I used:

Castrol Super Clean
Meguiar's Heavy Duty Cleaner
Meguiar's vinyl cleaner
Windex
and alot of elbow grease

It is well, adequate, to say the least. Looks better than it was, but you will always notice a spot you missed.

Thanks ppl! I think I'll take some before and after shots to see if I can tell a difference. Maybe I should have turned this into a poll to see what people normally use.

jeremy i know what you mean. Getting the car running should be on the top of the list. That's why if you notice my GSL-SE has no mods listed in my sig. I need ignitors and having problems locating some. *sobs* In the meantime I'm trying to clean my GSL's engine bay some to keep me busy.

Be careful. Some degreasers take the clear coat of the paint in the engine bay. Did it to mine. I would just use soap and water. Then armerall.

I found some purple ****, in my car when I bought it. To say the least, it WORKS GOOD, I like it. Then again, I like my moms, "orange spray". It cleans ANYTHING, but she gets mad when I use more than one squirt though Oh well

screw the purple ****. what can you spray on and rinse off. i got frustrated with the tank and decided to start cleaning the engine bay. ok, i ate the sponge alive and couldn't come close to getting aroung all the little electronic ****. arrrrrrrgggggggghhhhhhhhh. i need the tire foam cleaner stuff. spray on rinse off. i don't think it will hurt the electronics if the battery is disconnected.

Allot of the dirt in the engine bay is caked on. I dont think you can just spray anything on and expect it to just come off. It just takes time too clean everything.

The purple stuff at Home depot works great! At taking off paint! Be careful where you spray it and let it sit. I use it ONLY for tough oil spots or heavy deposits

girlfriend with patience. yes it might cost you more in the long run, but your engine bay will get cleaner. she looked at her maxima and just sighed as its bay looks like a middle east sandstorm. wow, a girl that cars what her engine bay looks like and not just the interior.

My fiancee doesn't really care what the engine bay looks like but she like the rework of my interior.
