Paint Code Differences

I am told MY '84 is the only year Persimmon Red (R7) was offered, but lately I have been seeing other years that closely resemble mine, such as on an '85 called Sunrise Red (RH).

I am asking if there is an actual difference in the colors, or if the NAME is the only difference.

Thanks in advance for any assistance someone can provide!

Although the lighting is different, I have included a pic of MY car 1st, and one of the 85s in the 2nd pic just in case that helps

R7 was offered only in 84, yes. RH, which you know is sunrise red is a lighter shade of red than R7 and is not a metallic color where as persimmon red is a metallic red and is darker than sunrise red. RH was offered from 79-85.

I am a painter at a bodyshop, i know you say the lighting is different, and i actually do not know these paint codes, which i guess is understandable considering we work on newer cars only, that insurance will pay to repair and the only mazda i recall repairing is a few mazda 6's, but i can say that the colors in the two pictures are close but the sidetone is infact different, along with the shade. I compare color chips everyday.... IE if you painted your fender with the same paint as what is in the second picture and then put the fender on your car, you would definitely see the difference, although its close enough that most people wouldnt realize unless it was right in front of there eyes, as in a fender painted the color of the second car, being on your car. Hope im making sense.... i have indeed been drinking. Hope this helps, along with mazdaverx's answer

this is interesting, mine used to be a V3 i believe, 84-85 only, but now it's a dark blue, when i got the car it was already black primed, only when i started sanding it to paint it did i find out that the PO blacked prime on top of the paint after he'd replaced a few things and fixed a few dents

Besides the obvious lighting difference between the two pictures, it looks like your paint has more brown in it than the Sunrise Red does.
