Oxygen Sensor

Well I went out and bought a new oxygen sensor, and even rented the oxygen sensor tool kit (AutoZone). Hoping the new sensor will help lower the HC’s so I can get a valid Texas inspection sticker on the POS racer!

What’s the best way to get the sensor out, going to let the old one soak in penetrating oil overnight before I try to pull it. Is it easier to get out from under the car? Any advice?

Weather was so nice tonight decided to tackle the Oxygen Sensor. Easiest way I found to get it off and back on was from under the car using just a 7/8” (22mm) combination wrench. Had pretty good accessibility. The old one looked like the tip melted off of it. Smoothed out the idle quite a bit, more tweaking tomorrow!

I changed my O2 sensor two weeks ago and yes, it made a big difference. Just that one $42 part smoothed out the idle and got rid of the smokey tail pipe. I guess that they don't go completely out as they get old, but they sure do loose their effectiveness.

I just used a cresent wrench and reached in through the top. Mine came out without so much as a bloody knuckle. Nothing fancey, not even penetrating oil.

After getting the oil cooler back on with the new RB stainless oil hoses (looks cool!), I took her on a ride around the neighbor hood. Damm, she's quick. I also removed the A/C compenents and power steering stuff.

btw, the other big improvement came from replacing the TPS. I'm looking at getting the cone air filter from Rotary Performance.

Anyways, I'm having so much fun, I just had to tell someone!

My TPS, appears to be O.K. Ohms out O.K. How did you decide yours was bad?

I swore a bit at the O2 sensor, but it was just for motivational purposes!

Syptoms were uneven excelleration and decelleration, and inability to hold a steady throttle. Kinda feels like the either the fuel or ignition is cutting out on you.

I took out the TSP attached an Ohm tester. It should read 1 to 5 Ohms as you depress the Plunger. And the reading should go up smoothly. When I tested mine, the reading would jump around from 0.04 Ohms to 7 Ohms, and occationally it will jump as high as 25 Ohms! No wonder the compter throught that I was pumping the gas up and down!!!

Rotary-MG, Appreciate the info, sounds like mine is still good, tested it this weekend, but it’s always nice to get a second opinion!

damn, that much difference in just the o2 sensor.. I bought mine awhile back, just have not installed it yet. Maybe I should do that soon..


POS, you still not passing emmisions?

Don’t really know, didn’t get it in this weekend. Figure my chances are better, but have a feeling my catalytic converter is also shot. May have to get one, you got your in Garland didn’t you?

yeah.. mine came from RP out in garland... pain in the *** drive from this part of town, but all worked out well in the end. Does yours collect and black stuff around the tailpipe? just curious..

Don't really get much black junk around the tailpipe. Well some, but not what I would consider to be excessive.

alright.. when my cats were f#ck'd i got a bunch of black crap at the back. At the time I had a monza exhaust system which is cool looking because the inside of the tips is painted yellow... Well, the yellow color lasted for about 2 hours of driving... Oh well.
