Me too. If it's hot out it makes a big difference. Usually turning the heater on will bring the temp back down to the halfway mark.
I've replaced the fan clutch, thermostat, coolant, and I have a cat replacement pipe.

if you can stop the fan with your hand while it is running your fan clutch is bad. ie replace it or go to junkyard and buy a taurus fan for 20 or so $ and find power and ground and switch or fusible 20anp link that shuts off when car is off and your cooling probs will never bother you again. replace t-stat as well get 180 degree.

there are some differences
(my car - imported to australia from japan) has a 13b
it also has yen under the carpet everywhere (found it whilst cleaning it one day )
and it has japanese service info under the hood
all i'm saying is that there are slight differences between models sold in usa, japan and australia
thats all

even if you cant stop the fan with your hand when you stick it in there it dosent hurt. your fingers just bounce off the angled fan blades... just dont try and stick you hand halfway through the fan right away.

ahh ok..
Well he must have been convinced that the clutch was wrecked .
I sure don’t want to put my hand into a 100Hp + fan
But I have been told to use some newspaper, put that in the path of the fan, and see if the fan stops or the paper shreds…

The angle of the fan blades pushes your fingers out of the fan. (as long as you are coming from the back of the fan, dont try it from the front)
anyway, If you spin the fan by hand it should only spin 1 - 1.5 times around. any more and its shot. (im not sure if the 1-1.5 is the correct number, but I think it is)

holy ****. no wonder rotaries earned a bad rap. OVERHEATING YOUR ROTARY IS HORRIBLE FOR IT!!!!!! i cant believe any of yall's motors even run. i was pissed when i overheated mine once by forgetting to turn the electric fan on (by overheat i mean it just touched the hot mark, not pegged it for 15 minutes)
wow

wow
hell the reason i believe it's got a bad rep. is because of the FD owners that boost high w/o complete tuning
my motor is very reliable and sees 4k steady at freeway w/o overheating
also depends if you have a dinky radiator

kestrel5325 made a good point:
"Second, air flow. Make sure that your fan shroud is not cracked or broken, and that the fins in the radiator are not blocked with bugs and junk. If you have A/C, then the same applies for your condensor, as it sits in front of the radiator."
In my case, the gauge crept higher than normal stuck in traffic last Summer, (I think a notch above half way?)
A week ago, I decided the A/C must go. (not enough refrigerant to cool anyway) After removing the condensor, I found half of the front of the radiator to be covered with what looked like dryer lint.
I'm hoping for cooler running if I get stuck in traffic like that next time!

I'm on board the Swap-The-Fan-Clutch train....
I swapped mine last summer and unfortunately swapped in a bad one.... My temps immediately were higher....
I definitely need to swap the other fan back in
This certainly should be the case. The fan won't be doing a whole lot for you at freeway speeds, so unless you've got a problem with the coolant system itself you should be fine on the highway. It's city driving that usually causes heat problems for me....

Burning Oil-Grinding 3rd
I noticed in this thread several placed where people said they fan belt broke and the temp guage went higher. I broke my the other night and my gage went down. So Why did it get cooler? I have a 79.

Overheating at higher vehicle speeds can be attributed to either blocked airflow, or a slipping airpump belt (if installed), or slipping waterpump/alternator belt.
This results in slippage at higher engine RPM, with loss of cooling due to slipping waterpump pulley.
Check for oil leaks at your OMP or otherwise that could be getting on the belts and causing slippage.
Overheating at idle can be fan clutch, a clogged up radiator or a thermostat that's stuck. HTH,

I had a mechanic pull a hot radiator cap once, just to see if the system had pressure. Guess what.........it did!
Then the jackass gets under the truck on his creeper, grabs the exhaust pipe to pull himself under, and said "GODDAMN, that was hot". Ya think? Then he wanted to know how I knew the inter-cooler was leaking. He said "is it making noise?" I said "No, fluid is coming out of it, so I just have a hunch that it's a leak. Give me my radiator cap, I gotta get outa here, and you gotta go find the first aid box."

my car never over heated before a few months ago. i noticed i was losing a lot of water but couldn't trace it anywhere. finally i noticed that when the car was running, water was literally pouring out of the exhaust! i guess i have a good leak inside the engine somewhere. well, time to pull the engine out of my parts car. i'll remove the rat's nest while i'm at it.
