Just one thing though:
Dowelling: $1000 WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I just got my 13B plates Lapped and Dowel pinned for $250. And the guy that's doing it, is the same dude that all of the fastest rotaries from South Florida take their plates to. So I know he knows what he's doing.
Just seems like alot of money.

k...my bad on that one its just how it was worded lead me to believe you paid some rotary garage to build it for you...and it does seem to me also like alot to pay for dowelling...it seems that it costs more for you guys to do everything over there than it would be for us to build the same engine over here...it would have probably been cheaper to have someone in the states do the work...as well as buy the parts from the states...it probably would have been cheaper...

Well not really, when you include import tax.. I was thinking about getting a engine from Australia (www.dysonrotary.com.au) but the goverment taxes imports a bit too much for my liking. Don't forget that these prices are in NZ dollars and our dollar hasn't been adjusted from when it was worth about US$0.50, so it's not really too far off what you'd pay there.

I bet that I could have that engine built here for a fraction of what you pay there...you said that you guys would pay $4000 for a decent FB but here we would pay like $400 for a decent running FB...I'd say that there is a huge price difference...if it costs $250 for a kicking dowelling job but it costs $1000 USD there...thats 4 times as much so I say you could build the same engine here for $3000...makes sense doesn't it? Shipping and duties would be a problem...but here in Canada I know for a fact that our taxes and duties are probably the highest and would say that on a $1200 order you could pay $600 in taxes and UPS charges! but I say that even if an engine here costs $3000 to build and costs another $5000 to get it to you then by my calculations your still $4000 richer than when you started...plus I doubt that your taxes and duties are more than %100 of the original ticket price!

He is a Kiwi! It really matters he is quoting prices in the half price NZ dollar not the bush dollar inspite of ithe latter's continuing downwards slide.
Out of interest the majority of cars sold in NZ are imported 3 year old Japanese models who in effect are sold as scrap with minimum mileage but hours spent in Tokyo traffic blocks. Fortunately NZ is also rhd so they get a second life

Ever since Bush started his little crusade in the middle east, the US dollar has been on a downward slide. Now, I'm not going to get political, because this is a RX-7 forum, but the whole war thing has really kicked our economy into action. All the prices I quoted were in NZ dollars, you should halve them and you'll have US dollars. I know we're trading at about 0.74 right now, but we haven't been adjusted since we were trading at 0.51 to 0.54 before the whole Iraq shitfest.
Realistically, this engine costs (in your terms, and compared to your wages which are higher here - remember, our average annual wage is about NZ$30k which, removing adjustment, is about US$15k - c'mon, there's only four million of us..) about US$7000. I challenge you to build a 400-500Hp engine in the states with NO existing parts (I don't have any engine at all) and done properly for less. Don't forget, this is an injected S6 engine, I'm not just strapping a Holley on and trusting my luck.
Please also try to remember that we have no emission laws whatsoever, we're not crippled by any kind of legislation as to what comes out of the exhaust pipe. This means that we can run these types of engines on the street with exotic configurations which generally tend to cost a bit more. It may seem a lot of money to you (and it does to me also) but I'm not stupid, I've done my homework for the last twelve months and this is the cheapest way of doing it.

On a lighter note, anyone want a 1998 RX-7? I can get one here with less than 50k miles for US$12,000. Not your game? What about a JC Cosmo 20B model for US$10,000. No? R34 GT-R V-spec Skyline for US$30,000?
