Orange Antifreeze...Good or Bad?
I had the super-high performance-high temp-special-orange-cool aid looking crap...I only used it because I had it. Anyway, I just rememberd reading something about how its not good for the seals...Is this true? Anyone have any insight to this? Thanks.

I'm pretty sure this is GM's Dexcool stuff.. everything I've read and heard said it should not be put into an engine that wasn't designed for the stuff. Something about the additives and stuff in it like to munch on seals not intended for it...

Aaaanyway..... yes, anti-freeze seems to be rather delicious and deadly to animals, yes, cats included. If what MIKE-P-28 says is correct and you like your pets, then use the orange stuff.

if i were you i would stick with the green, and change it about every 30k miles. i recycle antifreeze for a living, the toyota orange we make i just as lethal as the green. dexcool sucks, my 96 chevy truck is converted from dexcool to straight up antifreeze because the water pump kept ****** up.

The colour of an antifreeze or coolant do not have any real relationship to being toxic or not that I am aware of. Toxicity levels change with what chemicals are being used to make the coolant. Standard green antifreeze (the toxic stuff) is usually a ethylene glycol based antifreeze while the "environmentally safe" or low tox coolants are propylene glycol based. Some examples of lower toxicity coolants are those made by Sierra and Prestone's Low Tox. Thanks.

Here's the deal on coolants. The green stuff reacts with Dex-Cool (the GM extended life coolant) and aluminum and forms deposites and corrosion very quickly. On the lable of all GM cars equiped with Dex-Cool it says to only add Dex-Cool compatible coolants.
When GM first started using this coolant, the brilliant owners of these vehicals, and the highly educated, idependant "Quicky-Lube" lubrication technician that work on them began adding ethyl-glycol based coolant to these cooling systems, completely ignoring the clearly printed warning lable. Well Dex-cool mixed with the green stuff inside of the aluminium cylinder heads of the GM vehicals, resulted in alot of over heating motors. Usually replaced by the "Quickly Lube"that Bob and Shurly paid to flush the radiator at 15,000 miles. Because that is when the highly educated lubrication technician recomended it be done.
If you are lubrication technician please take you job seriously and be sure you are recomending the proper service to the proper client. If you do your own work be sure you know what were doing.
FYI I'm in a bad mood right now.

I just thought it to be odd that the NEXT DAY that I put that stuff in there, my water pump started leaking...I just got it road worthy, bought that stuff and put into a dry system. Drove it to the state patrol for inspection and home to lynwood and one other place in Woodinville. Total about 75 miles. Anyway, the next morning, the water pump is holding water about as well as a coffee filter...
