Can I change my 85 GS to power steering? What do I need from the junk yard? and how hard is it to do? The wrists are not what they used to be. Happy holidays to all. Bob

Buy better tires, Bob! After all those years of driving power steering 2nd gens and such, when I went back to a 1st gen w/o PS, I was taken aback by the steering effort. Then, I bought some new Falken Azenis Sport tires and damned if the thing didn't turn a thousand times easier. I don't just mean at speed, but in parking lots too. Those stiff sidewalls transmit your effort right to the contact patch rather than storing up the energy through deformation. I have to parallel park my car on a hill every day and the new tire setup is saving me a lot of effort! Just something to think about...

To get back to the crux of this thread.. You will need the steering column as well.. I'm picking up an entire setup next week.. I'll let you know how it goes when I get the chance to install it... gets damn cold up here in the winter..
Wackyracer.. if the speed sensor is not connected, is the power assist on full all the time.. I hate that damned variable sh*t.

Yes the good old arthitis in the wrists, comes from too much hard manual labor in the past 74 years. You dig graves all year long, those rocks in the ground raise hell with wrists, as do almost any other things we do.

Digging graves ?! I sympathize about the hard work part, but at least in that profession you are literally surrounded by job security ( who's next ?) and no threat of foreign competition, so I guess things are looking up then ? or down.. or depends on whether you're the digger or the client, huh ?
And 74 years in an RX-7. That is the coolest thing I've heard lately. I hope that's me in a few, too.
I was very interested in adding power steering, but it cost a fortune new or rebuilt, so that leaves high mile and unknow longevity salvage or parted cars. I got a little bit of an issue with taking those kind of chances.
Did we ever determine how difficult and effective it would be to put a quickener in the shaft backwards to make slow/no speed turning easier ? I'd like to know.
Keeping front inflation pressure high ( 35 psi ) and even skinnier ( narrower ) tires with a tread design that has low rolling resistence is a help. And, of course moving AS you turn ( instead of sitting still ) whenever possible helps. I would hate to have to parallel park my car more than once a week !
I know I messed up when I put a smaller ( Grant ) steering wheel in there. Jeez. I'm going back up in size but with a D shape ( like a MOMO Mod 12 with the flat across the bottom ) to give me some size back and still get my big *** into the seat.
Take care, Bob
