ok starting problems

ok ive read at least 50 different posts on starting problems. i have my 1985 rx7 that ive had for quite some time now....ive been fixing minor problems left and right but for the most part nothing major....Now i go outside to start my daily driven Dann (thats right dann) and crank but no turn or fire. i checked the plugs a drop of fuel and a little char...nothing big...checked my filters... since i knew i was a little due for a tune i went and replace all of the usual...i even went so far as to open the dizy and see if the pickup and everything was ok...they seem a lil dirty dont think thats a huge problem....i replaced the ignition coils because when you try to start the car you can usually hear them click and i couldnt. havent checked the starter yet. or the solenoid...but im thinking that the problems ive narrowed it down to are starter/solenoid fuel clog....or maybe a short in my harness....need pics let me know....mind the mess its a work in progress...i wanna see if i can get him running by monday...

Is the starter actually turning the motor over when you try to start it? Hard to tell from your description. If not, then check fusible links. If it is turning over, then it is probably flooded. Dump a couple of ounces of Seafoam down the carb and try again.

Also, you should not hear anything from your coils. If you could hear them "clicking" then you probably had an electrical leak and it was the spark exiting prior to the spark plug that you were hearing.

Good luck...

make sure you're getting spark at all plugs. make sure you're getting power to/from both ignitors (ignition modules) and at the coils. make sure your plugs aren't fouled (take them out clean them up check for any cracks w/e) and while the plugs are off do the "whoosh" test just for ***** and giggles. I had something similar and it turned out that my trailing ignitor was going out, and after so much ******* around with my car i ended up screwing the leading ignitor also. so be careful. they're quite expensive.

Firstly, a few ounces, down the primaries.

Second, just because it has new spark plugs doesnt mean its getting spark.

If its not starting it means its not getting something. Spark, fuel, air. (or compresion)

Air is in pretty good supply, bad compression can be due to flooding but otherwise its a spark or fuel problem..

for the "whoosh" (el cheap-o compression) test you don't need a partner...take the leading plug off first rotor and while standing outside the car so you can listen, turn the key ...then replace plug and repeat with 2nd rotor. (i'm pretty short, 5'8"/5'9" and this was not hard at all for me)

haha i did it like this at a walmart parking lot it took a total of 3 minutes (car started making a weird helicopter like noise turned out it was a hole in the exhaust compression was good and life went on )

I really don't think you need to go there yet. Try the Seafoam first, and chances are she'll fire right up running even better than before. If not, then check for spark at the plugs. If it turns out you're not sparking, then we can help troubleshoot it....

I had the same problem with my 81 rx-7.Coils clicking that means the coils are going to ground. You can fix it simple & cheap.Just buy the end rubber of the spark plug wire that goes into the coil and replace them.Or you might have bad coils. If the coils are going to ground the car is going to crank but won't start. If it starts, once you hit the gas it will shut off.

Are you missing spark on the leading plugs (lower), trailing plugs (upper), or both?

starters:
1983? - 2001 original starter, or one that was replaced before 1990
2001 - 2002 Auto zone
2002 - 2008 Cragen
2008 - ???? NAPA

Just to spite me , on its last start where I was going to drive the car on the ramps, the old starter worked perfectly!
