Question Oilll Filterrr Interchangeableeeee

I have a NAPA gold oil filter in my possession, #1522. It's the same diameter and a bit longer than the one on that came off the car. It threads on the pedestal fine. Would there be any problems using this filter? I mean more surface area=good right?

If it threads on the pedestal and the gasket is the same size, use it.

We use Napa Silver filters at work (have a 2 prefix). As I recall the 21522 is used on the "Gen III" GM V8's as well as the 4.1/4.5/4.9 Caddy V8's. It's a longer version of the 1042/21042 which is used on second-generation Quad 4's ('95-on). If you'd like, I can check dimensions against the "proper" filter and see what's what. I ***-u-me that this is going on a pre-FD Mazda rotary? (FD's used weeeenie tiny filters)

I had been using filters for '89-92 2.2l SOHC engines (626/MX-6/Probe) which were a half inch longer. The '1522 is longer yet. This is interesting, hell I'll do the research just because

I think the NAPA code for the oil filters I use is 1356...

This is interesting though, I wonder if it's cool to use a bigger filter that threads fine...

Egh, I found out that some ******** had put a fram in my 323 before I bought it. . . .

I kid you not, when I replaced this CLEAN, BRAND NEW Fram with an STP, my mileage almost doubled. How's THAT for quality?

That's interesting on the Double your Mileage Jay?
I've used only K&N Oil Filters since they have been available for our 1st Gens and a couple of times went back to Mazda Factory Oil Filters and I have never noticed any Difference.
However I noticed that the Castrol Oil looks Cleaner after Oil Change @ 1800-2000 miles using the K&N versus Factory.
I've thought about trying the Nappa Gold or Siver Filters but I try not to Fix something that's not Broke.

Napa's filters are made by Wix, nothing wrong there. If a larger filter will thread and seal then it's usuable, you just need to make sure it will clear everything with engine movement.

I've been using the Mazda factory filter, but in the past few years, it has shrunk substantially. Are the NAPA filters still the old larger style? If so, I may have to switch.

I use the Mazda filter, and have had a couple of different sizes depending on what they have in stock.

There is a taller one, and a shorter one. Right now I have the shorter one.

I did not find any problems when I was running the taller unit.

Just remember to run the car for a second to fill the oil filter, and then re check the oil when you chang it because the taller filter probably holds more oil.

Excellent topic and timely.

I was wondering the same thing when I was looking for new oil filter for my 80 GS with a 12a. The new filter spec'd by the books for fram or purolator ends up being this real short filter that looks like it would last about 1000 miles before clogging up. Last time I got a filter it was fram and it was full height. I'd have to look at the filter itself to get the number off of it, but I think I did that and went out looking for that number and couldn't find it anywhere.

In the previous post EonBlue showed the specs for a Wix filter. I'm wondering what the official mazda specs are for the filter and then how can we examine the filters in the store to determine which one will fit. I could trial and error it, but things like the bypass valve pressure make me nervous.

Guys,

I swear on K&N's Oil Filter, it's huge; it's got a heavy duty metal casing around it that WON'T get hurt if you throw it at a wall.

It's made by champion labs, the same people who make Mobil 1, Purolator, that out-do any other filter.

K&N is made to flow a little bit more oil, Mobil 1 & Purolator are made more towards filtering, albeit the difference is hardly noticeable.

If you spend $10, buy the K&N oil filter, YOU WONT BE DISAPPOINTED!

I had low oil pressure issues at idle with my K&N. when I took it off and put back on a factory mazda filter the pressures came right back up. Out of curiosity I cut the K&N filter open and found that there was a one inch section where the filter element had no fins. They didn't break off, they were just never glued in. The filter element didn't go all the way around! I think I'll stick with OEM from now on.

Actually,

There were a bad batch made that had the orange cap on it, sort of like Crane Cam's bad batch of cams that screwed up a lot of peoples engines.

You have to go into the store and ask for one to be ordered from K&N that way you don't get the older version.

The gauge holds steady at 20 PSI at idle and 60 PSI at WoT, it also depends on what kind of oil you're running, 20W50 makes my oil pressure go up about 5 PSI and 10W30 makes it stay the same.

Alrighty. The Haynes manual for the first gen lists the bypass valve pressure at 11-17psi. If that's the case then the Wix filter meant for it is fine but other filters remain to be unseen.
