CA Oil Pan Removal

Hey Guys,

I believe my 85 12A is leaking at the oil pan gasket, although it might also be at the oil metering pump as there is some oil on the top of the pan. My question is, how easy is it to remove the pan? Is there some sort of trick to it? Looks like the bolts are all easy to get to apart from the front ones.

Thanks in advance!

Relatively easy R&R for the oil pan gasket. You will need to remove the windage tray and may need to loosen the motor mounts to raise the engine. Oil pan bolts are a very low torque bolt, otherwise you can distort the gasket and have an even worse leak. You should run a flat bottom tap in the bolt holes to clean out any old sealer.

Make sure the oil pan flange is flat, particularly around the bolt holes.

Ain't no windage tray on a 1st gen, my man. 5 to 7 foot pounds of torque on those little bolts is what the book recommends.

Maybe windage tray isn't the correct term. The formed sheetmetal piece between the polyurethane piece below the bumper and cross member below the engine. That work for you Jeff?

Oh, the belly pan! I guess that's what it's called. It's certainly not a tray inside a V8 oil pan to prevent parasitic oil drag on the crankshaft. You know, because V8 is just a drink, to us.

That's an oil pan baffle plate. No wind there, hopefully, lol.

before you go tearing everything down, i would clean the oil pan, the omp and lines, and the fron cover gasket area with brake cleaner or a degreaser. make it clean and oil free. take the car on a little drive and recheck the suspected leak areas and verify that the leak is actually coming from the area you suspect. chances are that the front cover gasket is leaking over the omp gasket.

i;ve done this many times so here are my steps:

1. car must be on a ramp and jackstands to give you enough space to work underneath the car. and be sure to drain the engine oil.
2. Place small wood block placed between the floor jack and bellhousing.
3. Remove the 4 bolts in the front cover.
4. Raise the engine via bellhousing.
5. Using 1/4 socket/ratchet, remove all 10mm oil pan bolts.
6. Using small 10mm wrench, unbolt the oil pick up tube.
7. Using pry bar or similar, detach the oil pan from the engine.
8. clean the oil pan particulary the matting surface and sand it down using 80 grit sand paper to make it rough along with punching multiple dents on the surface using a nail punch (thanks to Judge Ito). these will ensure that silicone gasket wont leak out.
9. Remove the oil pressure regulator and wack the tip to get a higher pressure.
10. Clean the threads on engine block (oil pan).
11. Clean the 10mm bolts. Dip them in CLR for 10-15 minutes. Be sure not to get CLR on your skin or hands so be sure to use a cheap strainer and wash the CLR with water. Inspect the threads while you're at it. You can use CLR t clean the oil pan also.

I have good experience with copper silicon. Im glad I dont have to turn in this steps for grade as my grammar suck.

Not to ask to dumb a question but why are you trying to get a higher oil pressure? (We now return you to your regularly scheduled thread)

How do you remove the oil pickup tube before removing the oil pan?
