Oil Cooler Question
My GSL-SE Oil cooler has a small leak. I was looking for a new one, but I realize this too may be a "temporary" fix as well.
Everywhere I read, the SE coolers are notorious for leaking.
I am looking into the 2nd Gen Oil Cooler, as the fittings seem
more robust, and less likely to leak.
So here's the question(s):
Who here has a 2nd gen Oil Cooler on their FB?
How did you install it?
Pics?
New Lines?
Thanks.
For Reference:
Top - 79-82
Middle - GSL-SE
Bottom - 2nd Gen

ANy of the first gen will leak/crack = need two wrenches to hold the inlet fitting and to tighten the lines.
FCs oil cooler have banjo bolts instead of inlet fittings.

i really just need to know what size/ thread pitch barbs to get. i don't want to use -an fittings cause i like the awesome high heat resistant 250psi rated pressure hose stuff i use on my turbo. can anyone just tell me what the fittings are for the fc oil cooler and 12a inlets? yayy!

I installed a 2nd gen cooler on my 1st gen for the bridgeport. All you really need to do is get the cooler, lines and banjo bolts off of a 2nd gen. I doesn't really matter where you mount the cooler, you will need to make new lines any way.
I mounted my cooler where I wanted it then cut the soft lines off of the 2g hard lines, went to the hydraulic shop and got the hose and ferrals. (2500 psi burst strength). Cut the lines to size, clocked them the way they needed to go and took them back to the shop to crimp the ferrals. I did need to have a barb brazed on one of the hard lines, (cut up the old hard line that went from the front cover to the beehive).
Total cost was $40 for hose and labor.
If you want a detailed how to, I have all of the pics and have been meaning to do a full writeup.

hit us with that write-up if you can sir i know how hard it is tho. i've been meaning to do "another" turbo write-up to add to the collection, but some how i just never get around to it.

drop a note to steve84gs. I think he's done exactly what you're asking about. with something from steve and trochoid I think you'll get it worked out.
EDIT: go over to mazspeed.com and search in the forums for "oil cooler hose" and I think steve wrote something up.

Oil Cooler Mounting
NEVER_NEVER_NEVER mount an oil cooler solid to the car. Why do you think the factory uses rubber mounts? Solid mounted coolers will crack / leak sooner or later. MSD makes some really nice rubber insulaters for their units that work just fine on a cooler. They have a 1/4" stud on each end to use for mounting.

oil cooler fix
Alex,
If you'd like to keep your 1st gen oil cooler and not have to go with a 2nd gen, for simplicity of fabbing and install, etc. here's what I had done.
I took my cooler to a buddy who welded up a blob of aluminum around both fittings and made em really burly, then stuffed up the threads with paper and filed the surface flat. These suckas aren't ever gunna crack again! I dont know why most people havn't done this.

i agree with RacerX7FB, i did this little mod when i found a hairline crack on the lower fitting and now it doesn't leak at all. i did it to both fittings as well. that was until an apex seal seized up....it was bound to happen since it had an unknown number of miles likely to be over 160k on a chassis with around 155k

I dont think I have pics of mine anymore, because I wrecked that FB that I had a FC oil cooler on. I just use the SE oil cooler on my SE.
But I just mounted it in the fron dam, the only problem I see with you doing this direct freak is it might get in the way of your FMIC. When I had mine in, I didnt have room to put a FMIC in at all... one of the reasons why I was glad to get an SE where I would have room. But it looks like that'll never happen either (HELLOOOOO FD!)
