Oil cooler lines

Oil cooler lines
I know this was answered before but I can't find it. I replaced the beehive in my 83 GSL with a cooler from a -SE. But I forgot to write down which line went to the front cover and which to the rear housing. I think it's the top outlet on the cooler that goes to the front cover but I'm not certain. Can anyone help?

RhinoR61 is correct - on the cars with front-mount oil coolers, the top hose *must* go to the front cover, and the rear hose *must* go to the rear housing. This is important to oil flow for the following reasons;
1) clearance of the lines in the engine bay - the lower hose must go below the front stabilizer bar, therefore, it is routed to the rear mount, and more importantly;
2) the front-mount oil coolers are equiped with a thermal bypass valve located in the left side of the cooler which serves to shut off oil flow at low temperatures to allow for higher internal engine oil pressure during cold start.
If you hook this up backwards, you'll overpower the oil bypass valve and reduce startup oil pressure, possibly leading to internal engine damage.
