Oil Cooler Debris
I have a friend who just blew his engine in his 81 Rx7. He is now putting a rebuilt in and he noticed that the oil cooler is full of metal pieces. He could probably flush it, but how would he be sure it is all out? He is going to put in another oil cooler. Just thought I would mention it, because it would be a lousy way to louse a new engine. Thought there may be others in the same boat.

i recently had the same dilema. the research i did and the advice form a few reputable machine shops and mazdatrix, told me NOT to reuse the oil cooler if metal shavings are present, as there is no way to get all of the metal out and no way to tell for sure. i am not sure how much metal was in there, but the advice i was given applies to mostly oil coolers that were attached to an engine that locked up due to oil starvation.

Oy Veh!
You need that cooler!!!!!!
Start here, click on oil coolers. Go to your parts house, or search around on the website and find one. They're not too pricy.
A good hydraulics shop will be able to do the connections under $50

You can get a 2nd Gen oil coolerfor 40 bucks(if you look) and have the long hose shortened with a hydraulic crimp fitting and pressure collar at the hard line point. That's what's running on my GSL.
I saw a pic of 2 2nd Gen coolers running together once.
I think it was under projects at CPRacing.

Keep that damn cooler! Flush it real good and then use a magnet to see if you can get anything out of it. I'm talking about a big magnet. Those things are hard to come by and arent cheap.

I flused the 2 I bought off ebay with the parts washer at work. I let it run for a loooong time, then ran it the other way, then drained, blew it out with compressed air till I was satisfied it was clean. If you got the $ buy a good used one, but clean it first. If your not rich (like all of us here) then clean it best you can. Remember that the filter is AFTER the cooler so it should trap any particles left in there. My $0.02
