oil cooler conversion
Hey guys is there a write up on converting from a beehive style oil cooler to a front mount? I searched but I kept getting threads on the leaky beehives. I'm just trying to see what all I need to convert mine. I have a 85 gsl.
thanks

probalby not, if your going to go to a 79-82 style setup (as opposed to an FC cooler for example) its basically all bolt in.
get (all from a 79-82):
-radiator w/fan shroud
-oil cooler w/ rubber mounts and lines(or upgrade to stainless like I did)
-filter pedastal (goes where beehive is now)
-hard coolant line (goes alone passenger side of engine bay, from heater box on firewall to bottom of rad)
I would also suggest getting new hoses and a new thermostat while you have the coolant out of it. Also get new aluminum and copper crush washers to use for the lines, as well as rubber o rings for the pedastal. Once you have all that just:
-drain oil and coolant
-remove radiator
-take oil cooler line off front cover
-remove oil cooler (have fuuuuuuun with that, its messy as a **** and a pita to get at, 2 10mm nuts hold the bottom, a 12mm bolt holds it to the engine on top, and a 23mm wrench is needed for the banjo bolt holding the oil line to it. then is *should* come off.
-swap the hard water line
-plug or simply cut off the "t" water fitting on the driver side of engine bay
-put all the new stuff in, fill with fluids, and check for leaks.
That should be about it, any questions feel free to email me: slegers@nac.net

all you need is an under mount oil cooler and the oil hoses, an oil filter unit. unfortunatly its easy. i had a leak in my undermount cooler and had to put on a beehive temporarilly. take the beehive off( not much fun cause of the room to work, but if you disconect the the front conection on the engine first then the beehive, then you can jimmy it all out and you won't even have to disconect the oil conection on the beehive.) plug up the water hoses that go to and from the beehive. connect the oil line from the front of the engine to the top conection of the oil cooler. now the bottom conection of the oil cooler goes to the back of the engine. if you look there is a plug near the oil pan in the back casing below the oil filter. its a big bolt with a washer on it. undo that and thats where the oil line goes instead of the beehive. use the same type of bolt that went into the beehive for that one( can't remember the correct term). fasten it all down and whalla. there you go. the funny thing is, i couldn't tell you this yesterday. cause i hadn't done it till then.
good luck, fairly simple. just don't leave out and washers. you should use 5 washers all together. if you don't have enough they are like 2 bucks at the dealer.
