Odd noise from drivetrain..help me figure it out

Just got my car done today, after putting a gsl rear end on it, and when I'm moving at any speed, and there's no load on the drivetrain, theres a vibrating noise that increases in frequency the faster you're moving. It was happening on my old axle too (hit a curb with that one) And I've tried two different driveshafts. Both of them with the same result. What could it be?

Have you checked to make sure your wheels are in alignment and tires balanced?

OK what about wheel bearings?

Edit: Should say Axle bearings.

Edit 2: Have you checked for excessive play in the driveshafts? I suppose its possible to have 2 different ones and both with a bad U-joint.

Edit 3: I love my 82 GSL rear and driveshaft I have!!! Replaceable U-joints FTW

+1

Also looseness or breakdown in the rubber isolators that mount the transmission rear mount to the frame. & just for safety sake, check your trans lube level.

Mine was a wheel bearing going bad.

Try pulling each side rear axle and inspect the bearings for wear.

I mean it's like a pretty loud noise like a thunk sound towards the back whenever load is taken off or put on and it sometimes does it, sometimes not. It almost seems like it depends on the weather

I would check all links and bushings of said links to make sure that nothing is bent/broken or bushings missing or severely deteriorated. Also check (cant remember name) the links that hook to the body on the left and right sides. These are known to rust away and break off.

Edit: All the links and bushings I refer to are also connected to the rear end.

Control arms Ian, control arms.

If it's a slapping/thumping sound, then maybe one of the control arms has failed. Allowing the rear axle to rotated up/down and hit the body with the housing or driveshaft. Then there's the possibility one of the mounts for the sway bar failed too.

Replace the both Wheel Bearing. I had the same problem. First noise then vibration then the bearing freeze on me. Lucky it happen in the side street. It can also be the bearings in the diff too.

well i also had that exact noise but when the rear end wasnt under load(clutch in or coasting) for me i used to have an open diff and the spider gears where worn into the casing and the thrust washers were slapping around lol fixed that by welding it all together till i got my GSL diff haha
