not stock fuel pump??
I ahve been looking around for a picture of the stock original pump. This morning I was going to flush my fuel system out because I ahve been getting lots of problems with carp in my carb. When I took the pump off the '85 that I got for parts.. the fuel pump is small and its silver with some sort of valve or cylinder attached via a small rubber hose all most like some filter but its not. Its the size of a filter, well anyway its on the outbound side of the fuel pump. Trying to find out what I can about the pump I did multiple searchs and came up empty. Maybe someone knows something about it. It looks like a in tank fuel pump. The wording on the pump is as follows
CARTER
9123 A 504
Those are the only numbers that I have to go buy. If someone could post a pic of the stock fuel pump I would really appreciate it; also, if this pump did turn out to be a in-tank fuel pump, the car ran super with it, so I guess I could just transfer it over to the '82. Please let me know anything as soon as possible. I don't want to have to wire it up and then realize that it doesn't fit the purpose.
the arrow on the stock fuel filter is the direction of fuel?

safe to say it looks nothing like that one. It looks like a in-tank fuel pump. I'll post a pic tomorrow. I have to run out and get some "connector rings" cus I am wiring up the MSD box today.

Your pump sounds like one I have laying around, I will try and get pics up late tonight. Yes, the arrow points in the direction of fuel flow and the other barrel is probably a filter.

Here's a pic of mine. The # on the pump is 5A194 504, it's actually a quiet pump. I keep it around to drain tanks. The filter that came one the car is in the pic too. I searched for info on the pump, couldn't find any, it may be out of prodiction.

lol thats the one!
well it looks the same anyway. only differance is the location of the number and the fact that its a carter fuel pump. I have to say its one of the loudest pumps I have ever heard..lol
tomorrow i finish my MSD direct fire install.

If you reuse the Carter pump, you might need a pressure regulator to go with it. Or is this going on an SE? I just picked up a Carter myself, but it looks nothing like the one pictured. Most in tank pumps don't have a hose coming off the intake side (I believe). I think they just suck gas directly into the pump from the tank. Anyway, that's how the Bosch pump I put into my Audi worked. Good luck!
P.S. The noise associated with the pump might be related to the mounting of the pump. I also believe that the early failures reported on some of these pumps are also due to the mounting. Rig up some type of rubber insulators when you mount it, and it should be quieter and live longer (in my opinion). I will definitely be doing this when I install mine. I could hear AlienRX7's Carter making noise while I was sitting in my car, with the window up, and my engine running. LOUD!!! I'll probably take some pix and make a post on my installation, and I'll report on the noise level when I do this.

well I took a good look at the pump in my '82 and it looks stock. I have to place my ear under the car to make sure its on. Nice and quiet.
You can take the filter section off of some pumps and connect a hose to it. A friend of mine has some type of system in his 7. Hes got a toyota camry pump hooked up in line outside his car. I think he sent me an email the other day saying he was having troble with his carb.. lol I wonder what it could be..
