CA NORCAL rotary mechanic

I'm looking for a rotary shop that can help tune an original California 12A.

What do you need done? The 12A is fairly easy to work on in terms of a basic tune up. You might be able to do this yourself.

Need to set the lean/rich mixture. Hydrocarbon at idle is too high.

Does it have the Nikki carb or something else? There's tons of info on this site on how to adjust the Nikki.

Yes, all original emissions. Trying to smog for California. It's very close, so I'm looking to run the carb lean for 750rpm idle.

the best way to do it, is to go to your smog guy and ask for a pretest, and try a little leaner and a little richer.
sometimes if you richen the mixture the emissions numbers go down, you just need to try it

I followed Sterling's advice. I passed the enhanced SMOG check. I had a great guy who really knew how to SMOG early cars. STAR SMOG Check located in Greenbrae, California

Is it a one man shop, or if not do you have the guy's name? I am in Marin with a 12a. Passed enhanced smog last year but it was a battle. Would be good to have an old car friendly smog guy to use next time.

Getting the right guy is critical. Read your posts above and just got my 84SE smog checked last week, and it had failed the previous test cycle due to fuel tank vapor being vented when it shouldn't. Last time, I replaced the vacuum lines to the charcoal canister and checked the rollover valve at the rear and got it to pass.

This time around, it was failing to pressurize the fuel tank again, until an older guy with a grey beard walked over and manually passed all of the fuel tank vent tests! He even walked over to the gas cap test and unscrewed it slightly and then told the young test guy that he hadn't tightened it down enough...

As he walked past me, I smiled and thanked him, telling him much I appreciated it. He smiled back and said, "I used to have one of these - you just have to baby them!" and gave me a thumbs-up. It's all about the guy you get and whether he appreciates older cars,
