Noisy LSD diff

I have a 1982 GSL with a distinctive gear whine coming from the diff. It is not loud. Having nothing to compare it to I don't know if something amiss. The diff lube has been change and there is no chatter. LSD seems to be working fine. Maybe it is just the diff is so close to my seat and little insulation compared to other cars I have owned? Anything to look for?

If it does it while going in a straight line, then it has nothing to do with the LSD or the differential. If it makes noise only while turning, then its the diff/LSD.

More than likely, its worn pinion bearings causing your lash/pattern to wander. The pinion bearings tend to wear out fastest since they spin quite quickly and are the furthest from the oil.It could also be wheel bearings, although they tend to rumble, not whine.

Did you happen to remove the noise insulation under the storage bins, or is it missing? The rear axle makes some noise normally and without sound deadening, it's pretty obvious.

It is a stock LSD. The lube type is unknown as I did not change it. The previous owner did. The sound is in a straight line. Not more pronounced in a corner. I have heard wheel bearing go before and it does not sound like wheel bearings to me. Maybe I will change the lube to a quality LSD diff lube and see if that helps any? I suspect the pinion seal needs replaced and possibly some lube with it.

thanks

I have an 82GS with a small axle gsl diff. in it, my insulation has been removed, and the diff fluid has been changed and it still makes the same sound you are discribing. It has been doing this since the diff was changed a few years ago and nothing has let go to date; however, If I where you I would have it checked since you may have a different problem.

The rear axles on these cars are just noisy. If you don't have the insulation in the storage bins, you'll hear whining.

The previous owner? The first rule of ANY used car transaction is a total enema of all the fluids and apply grease to grease points. Never trust old fluids...

This is the 2nd person this week to have mystery juice. Put some Royal Purple in that bad boy.

Mine whined since the day I got it. Very loud, all the time. Had to turn up the stereo just to hear the music. It sounded like there was a lot of slop in the gears back there.

I put 30,000 miles on it that way, and no telling how long it would have lasted before failing. Last spring I swapped it out for a LSD unit...
