No rotaries among Time's 50 worst

Yeah Carl that Corvair was something else, you never knew where the front end was going to go. Lot's of fun back in the 60's, along with modified bugs. Then along came Nader. Those were the days.
Now the Pacer was another thing, kind of like a really sleek refrigerator with a lawn mower engine going down the road, looked real cool though. The 13B might help.

That list has some bogus cars on there. How could the best selling car of all time in the Model T be one of the worst? And there's nothing wrong with the Ford Explorer. The only reason they had any type of rollover problems were due to 2 factors;1: faulty Firestone tires and 2: idiots who buy an SUV with a high center of gravity and don't know how to drive. Of course there are no rotaries on it cause teh 7 can't loose hahaha

LOL, I had some buddies with some bad *** vairs. Some had Chevy SB's mid mounted, they were freakin rockets! And handled like a race car.

If you read the Explorer's caption, they cover it pretty well.
Nobody will argue its success, they sold a shitload of them and they arent bad vehicles. The tire thing was a fluke and it was disregarded as a reason to put the Explorer on the list.
It made the list because it started the whole trend away from effecient, purposful minivans-for-moms...... and started the trend towards gas guzzling, tipover friendly,4x4s that never see dirt. Its more a negative milestone, that it is a failure.

Shouldn't this thread be moved to another section of the forum, such as general automotive?
And the 50 worst list itself is bogus. It is completely arbitrary and without any consistent criteria. A Ford Model T? Explorer? WTF? The Lamborghini LM002 made the list because of its clientele? The successful Mosler race car is included because it was "ugly"? The 1934 Airflow is "worst" because it was ahead of its time? come on. Dan Neil is an idiot.

Who needs to drive in dirt? when you want to take 3 kids skiing and drive over mountain roads with all their gear and then park in snow-covered lots, it beats a f'king minivan that will get stuck. Nor could I tow my boat with a minivan. Explorers are quite purposeful and efficient.

I don't get a few of these... the Explorer? The Excursion? Huh? These were popular and successful vehicles. I know they both sucked fuel, but they weren't bad vehicles. another over-dramatic and bitter auto writer trying to make an impression so they can get a job they really want.
I don't get the Prowler either. I'd love to have one of these (matter of fact, I'm thinking of buying one). They have plenty of power at 253 hp given that the liberal use of aluminum keeps its weight down to 2800 lbs.
SSR and X-Type didn't deserve the ciriticm either... there were wrse cars made during the decade.
Finally, the Model T is on the list. Is this dude stoned? He must have a hard-on for Ford.

I am not an SUV guy. Hate driving them. I would never own one... and yes, they suck fuel. As a country our fuel management policies have been horrid. But to identify these two vehicles at "the worst 50" because of fuel consumption just isn't fair.
The Suburban has been around since the 70s, sucking fuel then and sucking fuel now. There's been a lot more of them sold than Excursions.
And there's a lot of SUVs that did worse than the Explorer on fuel consumption. Explorer was the big hitter in terms of sales.
Given their logic, might as well put the F-150 on the list too, as they sell a lot of them and thye get poor gas mileage as well. Actually, they should list the Dodge ram, as the circa early 90s Ram was the full size pickup that started the move to today's jumbo-sized models that we see today.

Well yes they certainly left out a lot of good candidates and their reasoning is hard to understand sometimes. I think car people make these lists from time to time to incite arguments. Still I found reading about all those contraptions kind of fun, as long as they don't include the rotaries (as some "worst car" lists do).
