No power

a few weeks ago I was driving and all of a sudden my 85 GS started running really ruff and had now power I had to rev up to 6k and ride the clutch just to get into the drive way. I did MMO treatment for 3 days and still drove the same, I also pulled one plug at a time and listened for the whoosh of the rotors and both sounded about the same. I then got really busy and didn't have time to work on it for about a week and a half. two nights ago I push started it and drove it around the block less than a mile and when I got back the cat was glowing hot, so yesterday I pulled the cat off which was not one bit of fun, One side was all broke up so I cleaned it out but the other half is still in good shape. So my question is should I keep the second half to help with noise until I can afford a RB header and presilencer?
I will be replacing the spark plugs and putting the cat back on today and hoping this solves the problem.

Best thing you could do if you don't have to worry about emissions regulations is remove all that and replace with a straight pipe exhaust of some sort.

Well I put it all back together and it still has no power, I'm thinking the worst. I will be looking for a replacement engine because I don't have the funds for a rebuild.

Is the tach working? Or did it die with the engine power. It almost sounds like an ignitor issue to me....

Either an ignitor or a coil.

While the choke is on and it stays running I put on my timng light and I have spark in all 3 coils. I then pulled the plugs and turned it over to double check and all four plugs had spark.
I had wished it was like that.
