No more Maroon!! Interior problems solved
Just picked up another FB, 85 GS. I love it. Rock solid, absolutly no rust, nice and light for the REW swap and it's Silver with maroon interior.....oh ****...I hate maroon.
Been doing a little research on my options with the interior. I want an all black interior with a few silver accents to match the silver exterior. I know recovering the door panels and new carpet is pretty straight forward. I was just stumped about everything else. I have basically come up with this solution. http://www.parasolinc.com/Dyes-Paints.asp
I will let you all know how it goes when I start. I will experemint with a few smaller plastic pieces before I do the big stuff (IE dash). From what I can tell, it will work great as long as I go to a darker color like black.
If anyone has done this then please feel free.
Thanks

I went the expensive route and just bought all the stuff from a car in a junkyard that happened to have excellent shape black interior pieces. Bought the upper dash from Dan "THE MAN" Atkins for a great price, along with an armrest and now all I need is a black vinyl sunroof headliner. if anyone has one for sale PM ME (sorry I had to).

Cool..Yeah, I was thinking of doing that. I have an 85 GS and we were not graced with black interior. I will have to do that for a few pieces, for the sun has completely vaporized the plastic, but it could be a long drawn out search for all of them; as well as being more expensive. I am here in San Antonio and the sun is killa potent. Interior fades out like platforms.

Here it is, back in the car with a leather shift boot from Maciek, before I changed interior color.
Here's where it's at right now, except it's currently much dirtier.

To answer your question about the plastics... Some of them, like the A pillar, the upper door surrounds, I covered in the same grey ultra suede as on the door panels... Got the idea from the interior of my Audi, actually. The headliner is a bitch and a half, I wouldn't suggest trying it on your own... I did it three times, and it never came out to my satisfaction... A pro shop will charge you about $100 to do it right, it's worth it.
The back plastics... I bought black ones from a member. I was going to trim the upper parts in the ultra suede, but I could never get it to look right. I experimented on my old maroon ones, spray dyeing them black and painting the top part grey to match my grey, but it looked like ****, so the back plastics are all black.

Am I the only person in the world who likes the maroon interior? lol
I do like the black better, but I think the maroon is plenty good enough for me. Maybe I will buy black interior pieces for my '83 Tornado Silver FB if I decide to ever put interior back in it.

It's not that I didn't like it... It's just that mine was so fucked up and faded, it would have been stupid to bust my *** to do half the car, when I could just do the whole thing over for not that much more work.
Remember, this is what I was starting with:
The doors were ripped, so they had to be recovered, the back plastics were faded, the carpet was nasty... It just made more sense to me to go with a full custom interior.

That makes sense $100T2. Its just everytime I hear someone talk about the maroon interior, its always bashing it. lol Both of mine had the maroon interior, and I like it. haha I was recently looking at an SA, and it too had the maroon interior. I won't buy it, but I just found it amusing that I was about to buy a third rx7 and all three were going to have the maroon interior.

Took the dash centre panels, window switch plate, and instrument bezel facia out of Pamela and put 'em in Carmen to preserve the body-colour-wiuth-clearcoat look. Not s ure what mazda was thinking having some panels interior colour, some flat black, and the console in dull silver...

well im going through the process of taking my interior on my parts car over to my running car. the car that runs 'had' a black interior, with a black headliner and dash.
the parts car is maroon. for all the plastic pieces, i'm going to lightly sand down and paint black. i'm sure it'll be fine because it's held up for years in my other mazda. i already have new black carpet for it, so going maroon is out of the question
but as far as dying parts of the interior goes. would the door panel be ruined if i tried to dye it as a whole. i dont know if it'll hold up to the moisture (dont know what it's made of, particle board?) and i dont know if it'll take the color as well some of yours did $100T. i did read the dye thread, but looks like you went ahead and reupholstered instead. any help or pointers greatly appreciated

I think if you dyed the whole door panel it would warp. $100's interior is exactly what I am shooting for. I am in a apartment so I can't do alot until I get my house and garage setup. From $100's thread, it definatly takes time to do it right.
I did experiment with a vinyl paint. I did the vinyl middle console and it turned out good. It has been holding up to the strong sun rather well. My friend wants me to do the dash with it as well but I am very hesitant. The paint is tough but I know that interior pieces take a beating without even noticing it. I think a combination of dying and painting is the key.

The paint dyes work wonders if you find the right ones. They can even go to a 'lighter' color, such as brown to blue.
My Uncle did an FB interior from brown to blue with GREAT results, as seen in this thread here:
https://www.rx7club.com/1st-generation-specific-1979-1985-18/brown-black-interior-477021/
That blue interior on the bottom of the page was once brown (as seen on the carpet, I beleive)
