No low end power
I tried searching the 1st Gen FAQ under the carb section but it doesnt give me the answers I need, I was wondering if any of you guys had this problem... My '81 has a 12A it's pretty much stock except that I removed the cat, when I take off from a dead stop it just feels so gutless. One of the other members of the forum Terrh took it for a spin and he said the same thing. He said it has something 2 do with my carb. I even checked to see it there was a clog in my exhaust but there was nothing, if there was I wouldnt have known why but I checked anyways... I'm not too familiar with Nikki carbs, so any ideas or input would help...

did u recently replace your fuel filter and check your fuel pump to see if you have enough flow. thats the first place to look before you start tuning your carb

Have you ever seen the primary intake ports on a 12A compared to a 6 port 13B? The 12a ones are huge in comparison. The problem is in the stock intake/carb configuration because the primary venturis in the carb are so small and the intake is restrictive. If you get into streetporting, a 12A shines even more because there is a considerable gain from it.
If you can properly setup a 12A it will perform very well. If you are worried about low end get a 6 port 13B but don't expect the high end that a 12A will yield when setup properly (unless you get an 89-91 engine).
For your low end try an ignition upgrade (DLIDFIS, 2GCDFIS, or 2GCDFISw/TT)and check the timing. You may also have to adjust the idle mixture (if you know what your doing) and the idle level on the carb. It may even be a good idea to get a rebuild kit for the carb and clean it real well.
If you are worried about starting off, you can also regear the rear end.

It takes off real slow and i've been in my neighbours FB, it's the same year and I can really feel it when he takes off, mine is like mush lol when I reach 5k in 3rd gear it really kicks it but thats pretty much the only power i can get. it does sputter while its idling and pops... if any of that helps

can you pop the air cleaner off and rev the engine by hand a few times and see if you can see the fuel going into the primarys?
have you checked your timing.
look for vacume leaks.
carb cleaner or a water mister bottle can help find these.

Well, at this point I'm still going to stick with an ignition issue. Start by verifying that you have spark where you need it, plus new cap/rotor/plugs just to be sure. Also, make sure that your battery cables have good, clean, tight connections at both ends. A bad ground will cause ignition issues too. Good luck.
