Newbie to FBs. S5 NA to GSL question
Hey, I'm new to FBs. I got one a while back and cant get the engine running. It has spark, fuel, & I've done the "ATF trick" twice and still nothing, it still sounds like a sewing machine. I dont have a digital compression checker but with a standard on it reads 0. So, I guess it is safe to say its gone. I was wanting to make it ('84 GSL) a reliable daily driver I can autox. I recently ran across 2 running S5 NA engines along with the engine harness and ecus.
Basically, is there any info out there regarding swapping an S5 NA engine into a carbed FB?

I did it on my 84 GS.
The S5 engines(turbo or N/A) present a problem with the mounting. The large electronic oil metering pumps wont bolt to a 1st gen front cover,so you only have two choices.....
1.Make a custom 1st gen front cover to accept the OMP and the mounts(what I did, worked great BTW)
2.Run premix and tie the OMP off to the side, with it plugged in to keep the ECU happy.
The rest of the swap is pretty easy depending on your abilities and familiarity with rotaries. It will require some custom wiring and reworking the fuel system to deliver slosh-free 45psi fuel to the engine.I wont get into the specifics because Ive done that a million times over the last 5 years.Check Mazspeed.com for all my various posts over the years as well as many that are here, from various people who have done a 2nd gen swap and used different methods. Not nearly as many have done the S5 swap because of the changes between S4 and S5,but the S5 is a better engine in many ways.
BTW,swapping a non-turbo 2nd gen engine is almost identical to doing a TII engine,so 99% of the info is relevent to either.....
