Hello all,
I am heavily considering purchasing a local 1984 GSL. The body has 172,000 miles on it but the engine and transmission were newer and rebuilt, respectively. It also has a new carb. The owner says that the previous owned did a rats nest conversion as well as a few other things that I can't remember at the this time. I drove it and it runs great, but has a few flaws:
--Passenger side door doesn't open from outside.
--Driver side door doesn't have a door handle attached.
--Minor rust
--One fender has a dent
--Paint is so-so
--Doors don't lock (Was broken into)
--No radio
--AC blows whatever the outside air temperature is.
They are asking $600. I'd like to buy the car and do a few minor things to it, such as repair the door problems and give it a fresh flat black paint job.
What could the car be worth after a few minor changes?
Tires are good, brakes are decent, and overall would make a nice full restoration candidate or great V8 transplant car.
It's a girl that goes to Indiana University with me that is selling it.
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks!

The owner before the girl repainted it with a crappy white paint anyway.
I'm buying the car for a quick turn around sale. What could I sell it for basically as is. I'm just going to fix the few problems and sell it as-is.

You could probably resell it for about what she is asking. Despite what you are thinking, you haven't run across a diamond in the rough. If I recall correctly, Mazda imported close to half a million FB's back in the early 80's. A dented, rusty, faded, so-so FB is going to sell for about $600. If you are thinking about a quick turn around sale, don't bother. You'll be lucky if you don't lose money on the deal.
If you want to make money, look into starting an IRA with your $600. I'm serious. If you are young like me (23) by the time you are retirement age that $600 could conservatively turn into tens of thousands of dollars. Don't waste your time, money, and youth trying to turn around $50 profit on a rusty old 80's sports car. There are much better ways to make money. If you purchase an old car like this expect to spend money on it, not make money....

I've decided I may keep the car...for a while at least.
I have two other cars that I work on (SC300 as a Daily Driver and a 1972 Toyota Celica ST with only 34000 miles on it: it sat in the original owners garage for 20 years.)
My plan is to flat black the car with quality paint and a deep charcoal metallic stripe that goes with the length of the car.
If I sell the car, I'll see what I can do with it. I saw one not too far from here and called about it yesterday. It was in similar condition but had more rust, and the owner sold it for 1650.
