Talking New to the Forum

Hey, my name is Justin. I must have been living under a rock because I just found out about this place. I live in Hot *** Tucson, AZ the perfect place for rotary engines. anyway glad to find this place. Hope to learn A LOT.

What kinda engine is that? What's the carb on there... that looks much different than others on here...

Btw, check out Paul Yaw's site and see if he needs any help at his shop since you live in Tucson.

Carb's a Dellorto. Engine's probably a six port 13B since it's an SE.

Yep. My Favorite carb on a rotary too. The engine is definately a 6 port 13B, the Lower manifold with the 6 port actuators are a clear sign of it.

Thank goodness he left the actuators on. Everytime I see a stock-port, 6-port 13B with them off, or wired open, I just feel like screaming,

[b]"Why!! Don't you like Free Low End Torque?!"[/b

I love being able to drive a rotary at low RPM's during regular driving. The flat torque curve of the 6-port is awesome, it max's (and flatten's out) at 2750RPM+ if my memory serves me correctly.

thanks for the warm invite. Yes they are Dellorto 48mm dual side drafts. The motor is a 13b 6 port with pineapple Racing 6port sleeves. I like 'em. especially at top end. Racing beat header and presilencer. Personally I like this setup better than the FI because it droped my drag times by two seconds( I had to sensor problems w/ my FI). My next big up grade for the beast is a turbo. any hints or tips?

You should look towards your local VW shop for a "turbo" rebuild kit for that Dellorto. I see you already have a boost referenced fuel reg. What kind of pump? Well good luck with your....... toy. I am running a Weber DCOE blow through right now, cheaper than EFI and just as fast as my buddies T2. So let me know if you have any questions.

No ****?! I didn't know they had blow through applications for the Dell'orto. I would've kept mine
in the past. VW? Well, you learn something new every day.

moremazda, could you post some pics of your engine and setup? I would love to see it, as I have never seen one of the sidedreaft turbo setups. Around here everybody just uses the Holleys.

Yea, the VW shop were ItalianFedRotory lives, sells the "turbo" rebuild kit for like $35.

And I will be posting pics like a Post ***** form hell once I bridge the Digital Divide and buy a camera.

hey if anyone needs any parts for turbo app. there's a place called Chirco Auto, that does Dellorts sidedrafts rebuild kits for a turbo app. Like MoreMazda said they're about $35 so if anyone wants one just let me know or even go to their web site.

Back in the day of 6-Port Turbos, there were two options.

    That was my DREAM back then, a Turbocharged 6-port GSL-SE engine with working acuators. A local shop called CLR would do the custom job's for like 10K back in the late 80's early 90's. The Torque was FREAKING AMAZING, but the Higher end was too restrictive with the smaller sleeves. They also used the factory RE-EGI EFI intake too. Quite the sleeper systems.

    Today, you can run sooo much more boost that it makes up for any low end loss of power/torque, so it's not feasible to have the sleeves in on a Turbo application. However I am still a strong supporter of working 6-port actuators on an N/A engine.

    Where would you get a Dellorto??? At this magic VW shop of yours? Whats the difference between the Nikki and the Dellorto? Wich ones better for a blow-thru turbo app?

    The only place you are going to find a Dellorto is second hand, through the forum, Parts Trader, E-bay.

    Nikki is a downdraft carburator specially designed to work on an emmisions controlled rotory. A Dellorto is a side draft "racing" or "performance" carburator. It has no emissions controls and was not designed to be used on a rotory.

    All of the Dellorto, Weber, Mikkuni side drafts were intended for use on piston engines. The whole side draft on a rotory thing was helped by Racing Beat's manufacturing of modified Dellorto side draft. They sold it in a kit form with manifold and all the linkages. If you find a Dellorto for use with a rotory it was most likely came out of one of these kits.

    Since Dellortos are no longer in production the kits are no longer availiable, but the Weber kits are.

    Now for blow-through app. I have seen Nikki carburators modified for use but there is alot of work and special machining involved, since they were intended to be used for emissions control as well as making the car run, they have a lot of small passages that need to pluged. Not the ideal blow through carb but do-able. The side drafts right now are the easiest to set up for a blow through application. It realy is as easy as bolting one on jetting to your ***** power level and going for it (well not really). The new Weber is what I am familiar with. The only things that need to be done are to make sure that the jetting is correct, or a bit rich for horse power level, throttle shafts have sealing o-rings already installed and come with solid plastic floats. You will need a boost referenced FPR and a capable fuel pump and viola.
